The Recruitment Rush

With the second semester officially started, a UR tradition, known as “Recruitment” started for the fabulous Greek life. We all know that movies about college, namely many Lifetime movies (LMN is probably one of my top 3 television channels), portray Greek life as a big party with no morals consisting of sororities with dumb girls that have no scholastic ambitions.

New [School] Year Resolutions

To start my Spider diary year off, I decided to make some resolutions (go figure) for this brand-spanking-new year! On that note: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Itinerary of My Life

As I mentioned in my last post, one of my good friends from high school is coming to visit me. I, who enjoy itineraries and having a schedule, started to think of all the places I wanted to show of Richmond’s beauty.

The End Is In Sight!

After such an exciting/exhausting first semester at UR, I can tell you I’m excited for the coming few days. I’ve finished 4 papers and 1 large final exam in the last 7 days, and have only an exam and a small presentation left for the academic challenges of this semester. Needless to say, I’m ready for the stress to be over. To help with that, tomorrow one of my very best friends from high school is coming to visit me this weekend for my birthday. This weekend I will be celebrating my 19th birthday with (hopefully) a trip to Sweet Frog and some Ice Skating.

It's Christmas Time in the City

I love Christmas. I love the sight of twinkling lights, the smell of pine needles, the taste of cookies, the sounds of Christmas music, and the overall warmth that is felt through the season.

Each person has their own traditions and ways to celebrate the holidays, and at UR its a melting pot that is shared by roommate pairs across campus.

The Thanksgiving Trifecta

Thanksgiving happens to be one of my favorite holidays. Why? Well, three reasons come to mind:

1. I love spending time with my family. As crazy and dysfunctional as we are, it’s always a great time.

2. I love typical Thanksgiving-esque food. Especially cornbread.

3. I love shopping on Black Friday morning.

Thanks to the Take-Out

If you were to take two people with completely different backgrounds and place them in one standard dorm room, you might expect them to be okay roommates, but best friends? Probably not something to bet on.

BIG Love

As a student of Westhampton college, I was given the opportunity to participate in the Westhampton Big/Little program for first year students. Basically, the program directors pair you with a “Big” sophomore who probably shares some of your interests or aspirations that you have for your time at UR. I was paired with M. (I don’t want to use her full name because she doesn’t really know I’m writing this about her so let’s just stick with “M”.)

The Inevitable

Well folks, it finally happened. The moment we college freshmen have all been scared for. I thought I’d be lucky enough to avoid the experience entirely. But yesterday, the inevitable happened.

I locked myself out of the room.

If that wasn’t bad enough, I had only my towel on.

Of course, if I had been paying more attention while I was leaving the room (instead of humming an old Avril Lavigne favorite) I might’ve realized that the switch on the lock was horizontal, not vertical. As soon as I pulled it shut and heard the lock make a *click* noise, I knew I had made a mistake.

Dancing the Night Away

As I mentioned earlier, I have a bit of an issue with the p-word…procrastination.

But shockingly, this week has been full of motivation.

What’s causing my sudden change in study habits?

It’s simple: dance.

I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Richmond and interested in Dance and Sociology. I applied Early Decision to Richmond because it had such a great mix of everything I was looking for academically and holds a deep appreciation for the arts. When I’m at school you can usually find me dancing in Frederick Rehearsal Hall, enjoying my study time in Boatwright Memorial Library, or trying to entertain my roommate with my jokes and facial expressions. Cookies are my favorite food, though macaroni and cheese is a close second. I am a part of the University Dancers for a second year in a row - and I love it! Something interesting about me: a major goal of mine is to be on the ‘Jeopardy’ show.
