High Ropes Course vs. Me

With perfect weather in Richmond, what could be better than enjoying a hot, sunny day on a high ropes course with your fellow hall mates?

UR has its own High Ropes Course that is used for sports teams, clubs, organizations, and halls as a means to bond during the challenge. Being 40 feet in the air suspended by just two ropes and a harness can be tricky enough, but maneuvering throughout obstacles while relying on the trust of your friends to not fall takes some bravery.

Bringing Home the Bacon, one call at a time

To fill the void in my life that has occurred after dance show (no longer am I in Modlin Center for 5+ hours a day), I have decided to take on another job on campus besides my lovely Spider Diaries.

The Phonathon Center is now where I spend every Tuesday and Thursday night, for three hour shifts. Many people have little idea how much goes into making calls asking for money, so  here are the top 5 frequently asked questions about my job:

Bellis Fest: a Daisy Tradition

Tradition is very important to Westhampton College, with Bellis Fest being a beautiful example that has lasted for decades. “Bellis” the scientific name for daisies,  is representative of the Westhampton symbol, the daisy. The festival, meant as a celebration for the arrival of Springtime on campus, hosts many student vendors and organizations that are run by the women of Westhampton.

Mindy Kaling, my new Hero

If anyone has ever watched an episode of NBC’s “The Office,” he/she would notice the character of Kelly Kapoor, in the head of customer service at the office, very quickly. She’s the only Indian character and usually has lines that are super absurd and so hysterical because of the attitude she puts in to them. In one episode, she wears a white wedding gown to a fellow worker’s wedding. Kelly Kapoor also is in obsessive love with another office employee, Ryan. As the seasons have continued, there has always been a background story of their hilarious relationship’s quirks. Seriously, go check out an episode or two.

Spring Break: PART TWO: "Being a Grown Up"

The second part of my precious week of Spring Break has been me trying to be a grown up. Even though I’m in college and living on my own at school without my parents, I still feel like I default back to a child when I return home. One reason for why this always occurs is because my parents still enjoy treating their youngest child as the little girl they always knew. Another is simply because I enjoy being taken care of. Being an adult is exhausting work, I don’t know how people do it (ha!).

Spring Break: PART ONE "Country Mice in a City World"

My one week of break after a long first half of Spring semester has been terrific. After an exciting weekend at ACDFA, the dancer in me has been appeased after some great classes and wonderful performances. Both adjudicated pieces that University Dancers submitted received overwhelmingly positive feedback, but not with a minor hiccup. During the performance of a student-choreographed piece called “Revival,” my very wonderful friend “H” fell, hit her face on the ground accidentally, and ended up breaking her nose and naturally leaving the stage! Of course, because half of the cast (including myself) could not see the fall or the graceful exit (which no one noticed), we had no idea what was happening until the end lights faded and we scurried off stage only to find her with bloody gauze under nose covered by a large ice pack. She’s going to make a full recovery, no surgery involved, so all is well but I want to give a major shout out to H for her crazy strength to not just start crying on stage after her breaking her nose, because that’s what I probably would have done.

The Triple D Weeks

Hi all! It’s been way too long since I’ve posted, and I’m so very sorry. BUT I have a really good excuse! :] Dance Show, Delta Gamma, and Doing lots of school work!

Last weekend was my first dance performance at UR, and I am oh-so-proud of what the University Dancers company has accomplished.  We worked from 5-11 (at least, sometimes later than 11) all week, performed the show a total of 6 times (twice for local elementary school students), and then completed the show’s strike by taking down all the lights, cleaning the dressing rooms, and removing the dance floor from the stage. Thank god for our wonderful crew! Though we had an exhausting week, the show was phenomenal and I wouldn’t trade any part of the experience!

Be my [BIG] Valentine?

So tomorrow is either the most loved day of the year, or the most hated, depending on your relationship status at the time. Even though I already did get a wonderful parcel of happiness from my Valentine who does not go to school at UR (shout out to him),  I am really looking forward to tomorrow is sharing my love for the people who make Richmond a great place for me.

The Countdown Begins

As I look at my schedule for the upcoming month, my color-coded planner is filling up quite nicely. And by “nicely”, I mean that there is very little time to pencil in some free time for myself. Why? Number one reason: the dance concert is within a month!

I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Richmond and interested in Dance and Sociology. I applied Early Decision to Richmond because it had such a great mix of everything I was looking for academically and holds a deep appreciation for the arts. When I’m at school you can usually find me dancing in Frederick Rehearsal Hall, enjoying my study time in Boatwright Memorial Library, or trying to entertain my roommate with my jokes and facial expressions. Cookies are my favorite food, though macaroni and cheese is a close second. I am a part of the University Dancers for a second year in a row - and I love it! Something interesting about me: a major goal of mine is to be on the ‘Jeopardy’ show.
