How to do Spring in Richmond

April 27, 2013

As the weather is getting warmer and the pollen is spreading all over campus (seriously, make sure you are stocked up on allergy medicine for the spring if you have ANY sensitivity to pollen), the motivation to do work is majorly decreasing.  With finals and presentations and paper, everyone is ready for a break. So, in order to combat these feelings of giving up on school because writing a 10 page paper seems unending and painful, I recommend going to any of these four places to spend some quality decompressing time.

Pony Pastures –Only about 10 minutes from campus, Pony Pastures is a beautiful place to relax for a day in the sun. Along the James River, Pony Pastures is a riverside park that has plenty of rocks for lying out and enjoying the sun.

VMFA: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - Full of beautiful paintings and other works of art from many different periods in time, the VMFA is great place to spend the afternoon. I absolutely love the exhibits dedicated to Modern art. The VMFA also sponsors cultural events, such as Salsa Night. With free salsa lessons and a live salsa band, it’s a great opportunity to meet other people and enjoy a night of dancing!

Byrd Theater – If it’s a rainy spring day, take some time to see a movie or show at the Byrd Theater on Cary Street. First built in 1928, the Byrd Theater has since been restored into a beautiful setting for catching a burlesque show or a recently released movie. It’s also in a prime location, near a few ice cream/fro-yo places, dozens of restaurants, and even a free public parking deck. The best part of the theater, besides its beauty and location, is the price - only $2.00 regular admission to movies!

Tanning on Campus – lying out in either the Cottage Court or the Greek Theater is a great way to soak up some sun and get work done. Anytime the sun is out and its warm, there is bound to be a few people hanging out at either of those locations in swim suits on beach towels. This is a great escape from stress and both places are conveniently located on campus!

Just because I can't get enough of the lake at dusk...here's a panorama shot! Also, the new ducklings hatched a few days ago, hopefully I can sneak a picture soon!

I’m currently a sophomore at the University of Richmond and interested in Dance and Sociology. I applied Early Decision to Richmond because it had such a great mix of everything I was looking for academically and holds a deep appreciation for the arts. When I’m at school you can usually find me dancing in Frederick Rehearsal Hall, enjoying my study time in Boatwright Memorial Library, or trying to entertain my roommate with my jokes and facial expressions. Cookies are my favorite food, though macaroni and cheese is a close second. I am a part of the University Dancers for a second year in a row - and I love it! Something interesting about me: a major goal of mine is to be on the ‘Jeopardy’ show.
