Christmas with the Lowe’s

Every year I look forward to my family’s annual Christmas dinner. When my family gets together fun and excitement do not lag too far behind and this Christmas was no different.  To start with the Christmas spread that we had was amazing. It really made me realize how much I miss Bahamian cooking with its special flare. I always tell people that seasoning is an integral part of cooking and this is something that most Bahamians have mastered.  It does not help that all of my aunts and my mother know how to cook well. Each year my family thinks of ways to make our Christmas dinner exciting. This year we revamped our Christmas dinner with games. We had a jump rope competition which I would have won but came second in due to a wardrobe malfunction. I will say that in primary school I was the Saint Cecilia’s jump rope competition champion. We also had a hoola-hoop and over-under relay. My family is competitive so these were really serious games. This year was also the year my family brought back our Secret Santa gift exchange. I think everyone enjoyed this part of the dinner because who does not like receiving gifts. Christmas is one of my favorite holidays and so it really felt good to be home with my family. I know some people think that Christmas has become too much of a consumer day which I agree with too some extent. However, when you celebrate this important day with family and don’t let the gifts overpower the holiday it can be one of the most wonderful days in the year.

Almost Halfway There

I just can’t believe how fast this semester has zoomed by. I feel that it was only a few weeks ago that I welcomed freshman to UR through Pre-O and now I am about to prepare myself for a new semester. I must admit that this is the weirdest things about college. Each semester is a new start. It’s not like high school (or at least my high school) where you continue with the work and the subjects that you did the semester before with the same teachers. Each semester brings new classes, teachers and experiences and sometimes that can catch you off guard. On that same note it also adds to the excitement of college, the fact that there never can be a dull moment. This semester was definitely my busiest. I had to juggle even more activities than the previous year. This is because I took on more responsibilities by becoming a tutor, participating in community service and just becoming more involved in the clubs that I belong to. Despite, these added activities I still feel that my academics or social life did not suffer too much which was a good thing. I am so happy that exams are finally over. I had an exam in every subject which was pretty stressful. Like Jordan, Organic Chemistry II was the exam I was most fearful of because it covered such a large amount of information. However, Orgo has always been my favorite subject so I don’t think the exam was too bad but I definitely put in a lot of study hours to ensure that I had this assurance. I was so glad to step out of my last exam. I was free!!This was my third semester at Richmond and now I only have five more to go. This means that my college stay is almost halfway over. This is a scary thought because I feel like I have just have arrived. This thought is even scarier because of my intentions to go to medical school. This is because the medical school application process starts before many other graduate programs so I really only have 3 more semesters to build up my case as to why I deserve to be a doctor. The pressure is definitely on but I think that I am ready.
