Not enough sleep - Part 3

It is a shame that I’m having to write a third part to “Not enough sleep,” but once again I feel the need to give advice that can already be well-known facts for all of you.

Last semester I was extremely excited about my schedule for the Spring term because I had organized all my classes in such a way that I would only have class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Therefore, every single week I would have a 5 day weekend starting on Thursday after my last class and ending on Monday night. Despite the fact that on Tuesdays and Thursdays I would have 4 classes during the day, I didn’t feel that bad about it. Last semester I had 4 classes on Thursday and I did just fine, so I figured it wouldn’t be that much of a problem. Also, I would have 5 days to do any homework due on Tuesday, so I wasn’t worried about that either.

Unfortunately, I didn’t think about how such a schedule would ruin my sleep cycle. On a Tuesday night I hang out with my friends until late at night because I know that on Wednesday I can wake up at whatever hour I want, but then on Wednesdays I try to fall asleep early and I just can’t. I end up falling asleep late, and then my 8:15am class kills me. I spent the rest of the day just as tired because a simple 30 min. nap won’t do to give me all the energy I didn’t get at night.

As the days go by my sleep schedule gets worse and worse. This last weekend I went to sleep on Thursday night at 7:30am (so it was actually Friday morning). I woke up at 5:30pm on Friday so I wasn’t sleepy but until 6:30am that night (which means Saturday morning). On Sunday night I fell asleep at about 5:30am (yes, you got it, that’s actually Monday morning) and woke up today (Monday) at about 3:00pm. Tomorrow it’s Tuesday and I have the 8:15am class once again…it’s quite entertaining to guess at what time I will fall asleep, but at the same time it’s kinda sad..

Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love having 5 day weekends and being able to wake up at any time of the day during my off days. The problem is that having 4 classes, each lasting 75mins. on days when you haven’t slept much is just too much for me. If you think you will be able to maintain a healthy sleep schedule then I’m sure you will find my schedule very rewarding, but I just can’t do it. It’s been 4 weeks of classes (which for me equal 8 days of classes), and I’m almost out of free skips in every class, because sometimes I’m way too tired and decide that it’s just not worth it.

Next semester I’m thinking about trying a variation of this same schedule. I will have classes every day, but all my classes will start after 1:00pm. That way, I can sleep until late in the morning, get enough sleep, and not have such busy days like my current Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hopefully this schedule will work better and I’ll be able to stick to that.

In the meantime, all I have to say is that when you come to college you have to make sure that you will be getting the amount of sleep that you think you need. Therefore, just like with taking off the cast by yourself and procrastinating, my already-known advice is to choose a schedule that will help you get enough sleep, and to not use all your free skips for the classes when you haven’t even reached midterms, cus you will definitely want to use them later!

Well, personally I would like to use them everytime, but that’s just not possible. So make sure you use them wisely!

Peace

Vacations and an injury

When I wrote my last post I was on my way to Peru. As soon as the plane landed and I turned on my phone I started getting phone calls, not only from my family but from my friends as well. Even though it was 11:00pm and I was extremely tired from the trip, I decided to have dinner with my family.

Mmmm, finally some REAL food! =)

Anywho…

I hadn’t even finished eating and my friends were already pressuring me to go out with them. I gave in, of course, and that was basically the beginning of a ridiculous streak of nights out which included partying, gambling at the casino and even some soccer every now and then.

It was precisely during one of the soccer nights when my vacations tragically came to an end. Very dramatic I know, but it was the Monday before New Year’s when I sprained my ankle while trying to contribute to my team’s success. I was playing my best and a guy from the other team tripped me while I was dribbling the ball, but I refused to fall so I tried to step in another direction in order to gain some balance. Unfortunately, the field had some holes and I just so happened to step on one of them. Now, I know I like to exaggerate, but the pain was seriously like nothing I had ever felt before. I stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes and then limping I went to the sideline.

Despite the pain, there were still about 40 mins. left of the game and victory in soccer isn’t something that you can take for granted. I tried to stretch and after 5 mins. of being outside I decided to go back into the game. My first touch to the ball ended in a goal and the pain magically disappeared. When I got back home, despite being the best player of the game, I couldn’t really enjoy the victory because of an incredibly swollen ankle and the excruciating pain that I was feeling.

The next morning, during an enlightening feeling of responsibility I decided to go to the doctor.

As you can see from the picture above, the results weren’t all that positive and the day before New Year’s I had a cast on my right leg that didn’t really allow me to move all that much. Supposedly I had to come back to Richmond with it, but after two weeks I simply couldn’t stand it anymore. The feeling of responsibility that had invaded me before disappeared as I cut the cast in order to free my leg. It felt really good being able to finally step and move around, but soon enough I realized I had made a mistake. My ankle was still a little swollen and every time I stepped it hurt way too much. I went to the doctor confessing my stupidity and he accepted it too. Finally following his advice completely, I got myself an ankle brace, which I know wear 24/7.

According to him, I have to wear the brace pretty much for the rest of my life. Also, I’m going to have to wait at least one more month until I’m able to play soccer again. This is not to say that my vacations weren’t better than I expected them to be, it’s just that the whole cast thing was a really negative experience that had me down for a couple of days.

Lately I’ve realized that I’ve been giving you advice that you probably already knew or that is basically common sense - like the fact that when you come to college you should try to fix your procrastinating issues - but I feel it is necessary to end this post with yet another comment of such nature. If you have a cast and your doctor says you should keep it on for at least three weeks, then please don’t remove it by yourself! I think it is better to have a cast for an extra week than wearing a brace and risking having a damaged ankle for the rest of your life.

Hopefully you will agree with this statement.

Not enough sleep - Part 2

All the people who procrastinate know that this issue isn’t only about homework…

My flight home left Richmond today Tuesday, December 16th at 8:00am, so I called a cab last night at about 6:00pm and asked the man to pick me up at 6:30am. After finishing my last final I went to get something to eat and went back to my room. I started watching tv and then caught a glimpse of my empty suitcase…great success…

At about 11:30pm I started taking my shirts and other stuff out of the closet and made a huge pile on the bed. Then, at about 12:30am I realized that I had a bag of laundry that had to be done because some I wanted to take some of the clothes in there with me. So I started doing laundry at about 1:00am, while putting clothes into my suitcase.

Another thing about me is that I’m a terrible packer. I ALWAYS overpack, and I think last night wasn’t any different. After I had filled my suitcase with clothes and stuff I remembered that I still had clothes in the drying machine. Once again, great success…

So I went downstairs and brought back all my clothes from the laundry room. Painfully I had to re-pack, leaving a lot of stuff in the closet and in some drawers. At about 3:00am I decided to take a break in order to play some wii. That lasted until about 4, and then by the time I was done with packing everything it was already almost 5:00am. I went to sleep and it seemed as if my phone started ringing 5 seconds after I closed my eyes. The guy on the other side was telling me that my cab was downstairs, so I had to get out of bed and walk through the coldness of the early rainy morning feeling like a zombie.

My flight left Richmond at 8:00am and, in the two and a half hours that it lasted I only slept for about half an hour. When I got to Miami (where I am right now), I realized that I still had to finish an assignment due today for my music class. Talk about procrastination! So I worked on that and I finished it about 2 hours ago. I got really hungry after that and then I started talking to some friends.

The plane leaves Miami at 4:30pm and the flight lasts about 6 hours. Hopefully I will be able to get some sleep!
