My first trip to D.C.

When I became the RA for the program called “Spanish in the Community” I knew that I would have a relatively easy time in the class that I would have to take. All we do is get new vocabulary and practice talking in Spanish. In this case, both are for people in the intermediate level, and therefore both are completely unnecessary for me. Even though I learn new stuff, like different immigration policies and such, the class has ultimately become a waste of my time and also, most ironically, one of the most time-consuming of all my classes.

One of the reasons is that we have a community service requirement, where we have to serve at least 20 hours and then prepare a project about it. The other reason is that we have multiple conferences we must attend, all of them off campus, for which we must write summaries.

One of these was a trip to D.C. to take part of the opening for the “Latinos Leading in a Global Society” conference, hosted by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). For this trip, we had to wake up at 5:30am, on a Monday, in order to be in the van by 6. We ended up getting to D.C. at about 8:30 and we were all more than ready for breakfast.

I gotta give it to the people who organized the whole thing. We were all treated like kings (and queens) at the conference. The food was amazing and we had people looking after us all the time and making sure we were comfortable and that we had everything we needed. A lot of important people were also there, and President Obama was even giving a speech the following days.

The Secretary of Education (Arne Duncan) was there.

The Honorable Ciro Rodriguez was there

This lady from CNN whose name I can’t remember right now was there…

And, of course, I was there!

Haha!

Anyway…I learned a lot from the D.C. experience and had a great time. Even though it made me miss a whole day of classes (not exactly a good thing when you’re getting into classes for your major) and didn’t get us back to campus until around 9:30pm, I was glad I got to go on my first trip to D.C.

Puppets, Music and Weird Noises

Since Richmond is a liberal arts school, we have to take classes that fulfill general education requirements. Even if it’s not part of your major, you have to take at least one Historical Studies, Natural Science, Literary Studies, Social Analysis, Symbolic Reasoning and Visual & Performing Arts class, as well as Core 101 and 102, Compository Writing and a foreign language. This semester, I took Indonesian Music & Theater for the Visual & Performing Arts credit, and it was a really interesting class.

Tuesday’s and Thursday’s we met for class at Booker Hall of Music. The first 30 mins. of class we discussed the readings and watched videos that related to them, and the other 45 mins. we went downstairs for our workshops. In these, we played instruments (the gamelan) and learned the proper techniques to do so. Even though the first 30 mins. went by really slowly sometimes, the second part of the class was always over sooner than we expected it to. We had so much fun that it didn’t even feel like it was part of a class.

As we improved our skills with the gamelan, we were introduced to shadow puppetry and later on even to a little of mask dancing. Classes only became more fun when this happened, cus we were asked to create our own stories with the puppets and make all the weird noises and sounds for each character.

About 4 weeks ago, we were told that we were going to have to perform for an audience during the World Music Concert. We all started freaking out a little bit, even more when we discovered we were the opening act! Still, we started training and preparing for it, figuring out a storyline and practicing the voices and the movements for each puppet.

Because of my deep voice and my willingness to make a fool out of myself, I got the Kayonan. This is the leaf puppet, which opens and ends each shadow puppetry show and also acts as a narrator. I also got to play a dragon and a small clown every once in a while.

For four weeks we trained twice a week and on Sunday, April 19th we had our performance. I went back to my years of theater in middle and high school and had a lot of fun. Everyone in the audience really enjoyed our presentation and at the end we all felt really proud of ourselves.

Meal Plan Efficiency

Probably one of the most important factors when trying to get through the years of college is your nutrition. It can help you study better for tests, perform better in sports and even enable you to get enough sleep. As a student at UR you have a couple of options while deciding where and what you want to eat. As a freshmen, I get 19 meals a week and 150 dining dollars for the whole semester. From Monday through Friday you are supposed to use 3 meals a day (eating breakfast, lunch and dinner,) while on Saturday and Sunday you can eat brunch and dinner, using 2 meals each day.

Of course, nobody really expects you to use ALL your meal swipes each week, or to get all 3 meals on weekdays, but since your meals are already paid for before the semester starts, using your meal swipes can also be considered as getting back some of the money you spend just for being a UR student.

If you’re not a morning person - like you know I’m not - you could potentially be using only 14 meals out of the 19 you’ve paid for, but here are some ways you can use your meal swipes a bit more efficiently.

Whether you eat at Tyler’s Grill or at the Dining Hall (Dhall) you are allowed to use 2 meal swipes every meal. This means that you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner twice. If you’re not a morning person, then you won’t be eating breakfast, but you can always have two dinners! One of the options is going to Dhall and on your way back to your dorm stopping at Tyler’s Grill. Here, you can get some more food in case you get hungry later on (this is specially useful when you stay up late writing essays or studying for tests). Also, instead of buying more food you can buy snacks like muffins, cereal, cookies, candy and fruit.

The other option is going to Tyler’s for dinner and buying enough food so that you have to pay for it using 2 meal swipes. Each meal swipe at Tyler’s is worth about $7.00, so if you buy $14.00 worth of actual food + snacks (or just of food, whatever floats your boat), you can use up 2 swipes and it will seem as if you had two dinners. You can do the same thing over lunch.

The only thing you have to be careful of is using too many meals during the week. If you do eat breakfast, then it’s probably not the best idea to be having double dinners. If you do, then by the time the weekend comes you won’t have enough meals to have brunch or dinner on Sunday. In this case, you can use your dining dollars to buy some snacks if you get hungry during the day. This is way better than using a whole meal swipe because once your card is swiped for a meal, you are automatically charged the $7.00, even if you only bought $4.00 worth of food. With dining dollars, you can go to ETC (which is inside Dhall, to the left of where you go to swipe your spidercard) and buy drinks, chips, gum or whatever you feel like eating. During late nights you can also go to the Dean’s Den (located at the Whitehurst game room) and buy snacks with your dining dollars or go to The Cellar in the Commons (something similar to a T.G.I Friday’s) and use the same currency to pay for your food. Finally, you can go to Tyler’s and pay for your food with your dining dollars in order to not be charged $7.00 just for a burger.

If you’re not a morning person, but you still like to eat a lot, you can always do the same thing! And you don’t have to worry about missing out on brunch during the weekends, cus it’s available until 4:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

There’s nothing better than waking up at 3:00pm on a Sunday and still be able to eat pancakes, cereal or scrambled eggs. =)

Hopefully all of this information will be helpful to you next time you feel like you’re not using enough meals…or next time you get hungry.
