As you already know, I’m from Peru and I came home for the Summer break. Hopefully, you also know that 4th of July isn’t a special day for us Peruvians cus our Independence Day isn’t the same as for Americans. This post will show you just what a normal 4th of July is for us.
First of all, 4th of July was a Saturday this year, so I went to bed really late. I was awake as soon as the day began (which for me is at midnight of the 3rd) but no celebrations were going on at the time. At least not cus of America’s Independence Day, haha. I ended up going to bed at almost 3:00am, but I didn’t have anything to do early in the morning, so I woke up at about 12:30pm. Other people probably had to wake up earlier than that to go to work, cus 4th of July isn’t a non-working day for us. Poor them…
I had lunch at about 2 and then came back to my room to watch tv and play Guitar Hero to keep myself entertained. I didn’t have any family reunions to go to and my friends weren’t planning a cookout. Still, I talked to a friend and he told me I should go to his place so we could watch Peru’s game.
I got there at about 10:00pm, and we had some snacks and a couple of drinks (oh, yeah, in Peru the legal drinking age is 18, btw. You wish you were here now, huh?). The game ended almost at 1:00am and then we played some Winning Eleven until we were so tired that we decided to go to bed.
That was my 4th of July. No cookouts, no family reunions, no flags and no fireworks (I know, that last one kinda sucks. I do enjoy fireworks…)
Now, don’t get me wrong. I live in the US now and I went to an American school here in Peru, so I know the Star Spangled Banner by heart and I respect American patriotism. I also obviously respect the holiday itself, cus Peru has its own Independence Day and we have celebrations as well. I probably would’ve very much enjoyed a cookout and fireworks at night, but I just wanted to show you all what 4th of July is like for me now that I’m back in Peru.
I hope all of you had a great time. I did, even though I really did nothing at all. I guess that’s what I do best, haha. =)
Happy 4th of July!
