Meal Plan Efficiency

Probably one of the most important factors when trying to get through the years of college is your nutrition. It can help you study better for tests, perform better in sports and even enable you to get enough sleep. As a student at UR you have a couple of options while deciding where and what you want to eat. As a freshmen, I get 19 meals a week and 150 dining dollars for the whole semester. From Monday through Friday you are supposed to use 3 meals a day (eating breakfast, lunch and dinner,) while on Saturday and Sunday you can eat brunch and dinner, using 2 meals each day.

Of course, nobody really expects you to use ALL your meal swipes each week, or to get all 3 meals on weekdays, but since your meals are already paid for before the semester starts, using your meal swipes can also be considered as getting back some of the money you spend just for being a UR student.

If you’re not a morning person - like you know I’m not - you could potentially be using only 14 meals out of the 19 you’ve paid for, but here are some ways you can use your meal swipes a bit more efficiently.

Whether you eat at Tyler’s Grill or at the Dining Hall (Dhall) you are allowed to use 2 meal swipes every meal. This means that you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner twice. If you’re not a morning person, then you won’t be eating breakfast, but you can always have two dinners! One of the options is going to Dhall and on your way back to your dorm stopping at Tyler’s Grill. Here, you can get some more food in case you get hungry later on (this is specially useful when you stay up late writing essays or studying for tests). Also, instead of buying more food you can buy snacks like muffins, cereal, cookies, candy and fruit.

The other option is going to Tyler’s for dinner and buying enough food so that you have to pay for it using 2 meal swipes. Each meal swipe at Tyler’s is worth about $7.00, so if you buy $14.00 worth of actual food + snacks (or just of food, whatever floats your boat), you can use up 2 swipes and it will seem as if you had two dinners. You can do the same thing over lunch.

The only thing you have to be careful of is using too many meals during the week. If you do eat breakfast, then it’s probably not the best idea to be having double dinners. If you do, then by the time the weekend comes you won’t have enough meals to have brunch or dinner on Sunday. In this case, you can use your dining dollars to buy some snacks if you get hungry during the day. This is way better than using a whole meal swipe because once your card is swiped for a meal, you are automatically charged the $7.00, even if you only bought $4.00 worth of food. With dining dollars, you can go to ETC (which is inside Dhall, to the left of where you go to swipe your spidercard) and buy drinks, chips, gum or whatever you feel like eating. During late nights you can also go to the Dean’s Den (located at the Whitehurst game room) and buy snacks with your dining dollars or go to The Cellar in the Commons (something similar to a T.G.I Friday’s) and use the same currency to pay for your food. Finally, you can go to Tyler’s and pay for your food with your dining dollars in order to not be charged $7.00 just for a burger.

If you’re not a morning person, but you still like to eat a lot, you can always do the same thing! And you don’t have to worry about missing out on brunch during the weekends, cus it’s available until 4:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

There’s nothing better than waking up at 3:00pm on a Sunday and still be able to eat pancakes, cereal or scrambled eggs. =)

Hopefully all of this information will be helpful to you next time you feel like you’re not using enough meals…or next time you get hungry.

Spring Break Shooting

No. This is not a post about a tragedy that took place over Spring break. It isn’t the review of a novel or of a movie either. From Friday, March 6th to Sunday, March 15th every student at UR enjoyed 10 days of break. No classes, no food from Dhall (at least not for most of us) and finally the chance to rest.

Many of my friends went back home, but for me it was much more difficult to do that. At the beginning of the semester I was thinking about taking a week off apart from the break in order to stay home for two weeks. I even considered having a 3-week Spring break in order to see Iron Maiden in concert back in Lima. Unfortunately, I realized that during the weeks after the break I had many things to turn in and some tests to take. Going back home didn’t seem profitable or worth it if it was only for a week, so I made other plans. Talking to my girlfriend we decided I could go home with her.

Apart from meeting some members of her family, her friends and going to her high school, she had been looking forward to going shooting at her grandpa’s farm. I had gone shooting only once before in my life and a long time ago, but I remembered I had fun that time and was excited. In my mind I could see myself as a little kid playing with a little plastic gun, rolling on the floor and into rooms pretending I was saving hostages from evil criminals.

Of course I didn’t tell her that at that moment…

As you might have guessed, I didn’t get to roll on the floor with the REAL gun or go into rooms telling everyone to drop their weapons, but I still had a great time. I was able to hit the target every once in a while, which was more than I expected going into this. Perhaps the only bad thing is that I cut my thumb while shooting.

My left hand was a little too high while holding the gun. I pulled the trigger. I felt something similar to a needle going into my thumb. I fell to the ground, crying. Hahaha no, I’m kidding. It wasn’t THAT bad =). It was a really deep cut, and I still have it marked on my thumb, but I was able to shoot a couple more rounds and had a great time.

I’m currently looking for work as an FBI agent or something.

Winning eleven - zero

As you may or may not know, one of the requirements in order to be considered a true soccer fan is to have a soccer game for any video game console (either ps2, ps3, x-box, etc.) and to actually enjoy playing it. Whether it is Winning Eleven or Fifa, playing one of these soccer games is what truly differentiates a soccer lover from  someone who enjoys any other sport. Of course, I enjoy playing both games every time I have the chance to, but I must admit that my favorite of the two is Winning Eleven. I started playing the game when I was about 10, and over the years I improved my skills until I got to the point were people began having a lot of trouble beating me. All my closest friends play the game as well, but none of them are consistent at obtaining good results against me.

When I got to UR last semester, I didn’t bring my ps2 or my ps3 with me because I still hadn’t bought a tv for my room and therefore figured I really wouldn’t have the chance to play. Also, I wanted to see exactly how much free time I was going to have, considering I was going to be really busy and maybe overwhelmed by the whole college experience. By the end of the semester, during Thanksgiving break, I bought a tv for my room, and brought my ps2 with me when I came back from home after Winter break.

To say the truth, I haven’t had the time to play the game all that much, but on weekends (and whenever I don’t have anything else to do) I play with a team I created in the Master’s League. Yet, playing by myself isn’t nearly as entertaining as playing against someone with some skill, and that’s the reason why I was really glad to discover my roommate also enjoyed playing the game.

We have played quite a few times, and even though he’s been able to win a couple of games every now and then, I’m the overall winner so far. Sometimes, the scores are so ridiculous in my favor, that I just can’t help but make fun of him.

7-0.jpg

The picture above is perhaps the most absurd result between the two of us. He’s really not a bad player, but whenever he has an off day I have to take advantage of it! I was playing with Barcelona (the team that I always play with) and he chose Liverpool because he’s a Liverpool fan (or so he says). The first half finished and I was already winning by 6 goals. I truly thought I was going to be able to reach the double digits, but I stopped paying attention to the game because I knew I had it won, and he started playing a bit better. I could only score one more goal on the second half, but he was still humiliated.

From that moment on I’ve been trying to achieve an even more ridiculous victory, but I haven’t been able to do so (at least not yet!). Sometimes I ask him if he wants to play and he says no, so I tell him he’s just afraid.

I have decided, and he knows this, that if I ever get to beat him 11-0, then it’s game over and we’ll never play against each other again.

Wouldn’t really surprise me if it does!
