Not enough sleep - Part 2

All the people who procrastinate know that this issue isn’t only about homework…

My flight home left Richmond today Tuesday, December 16th at 8:00am, so I called a cab last night at about 6:00pm and asked the man to pick me up at 6:30am. After finishing my last final I went to get something to eat and went back to my room. I started watching tv and then caught a glimpse of my empty suitcase…great success…

At about 11:30pm I started taking my shirts and other stuff out of the closet and made a huge pile on the bed. Then, at about 12:30am I realized that I had a bag of laundry that had to be done because some I wanted to take some of the clothes in there with me. So I started doing laundry at about 1:00am, while putting clothes into my suitcase.

Another thing about me is that I’m a terrible packer. I ALWAYS overpack, and I think last night wasn’t any different. After I had filled my suitcase with clothes and stuff I remembered that I still had clothes in the drying machine. Once again, great success…

So I went downstairs and brought back all my clothes from the laundry room. Painfully I had to re-pack, leaving a lot of stuff in the closet and in some drawers. At about 3:00am I decided to take a break in order to play some wii. That lasted until about 4, and then by the time I was done with packing everything it was already almost 5:00am. I went to sleep and it seemed as if my phone started ringing 5 seconds after I closed my eyes. The guy on the other side was telling me that my cab was downstairs, so I had to get out of bed and walk through the coldness of the early rainy morning feeling like a zombie.

My flight left Richmond at 8:00am and, in the two and a half hours that it lasted I only slept for about half an hour. When I got to Miami (where I am right now), I realized that I still had to finish an assignment due today for my music class. Talk about procrastination! So I worked on that and I finished it about 2 hours ago. I got really hungry after that and then I started talking to some friends.

The plane leaves Miami at 4:30pm and the flight lasts about 6 hours. Hopefully I will be able to get some sleep!

Not enough sleep

Finals week was perhaps the most harmful towards my sleeping schedule. Starting on Wednesday the 10th, I had to turn in a Core take-home on Thursday, take a Leadership final on Thursday, give a presentation on Friday, turn in another take-home on Monday and take my last final on Monday night.

Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to do work long time before it’s due. Procrastinating is an ability (or disability…) that I acquired since the beginning of high school, and that has only gotten worse. This semester in particular has been horrible. An essay that was due at 4:00pm on a Friday, which had been given to us more than two weeks in advance, I ended up STARTING to write it at 12:00pm on the very same day it was due. Even though I was procrastinating, it wasn’t exactly a problem because I managed to finish on time and get a B- or something close enough to that. The problem began when it started affecting my sleeping patterns. I had pulled a couple of all-nighters before in high school but here it became almost a weekly thing. I realized I was procrastinating way too much when I had two essays due before 1:30pm on a Friday and I started writing the first one at about 3:00am (I got the grades back a couple of days ago and I got a B- on one and an A on the other, but still…)

So, I started writing the Core take-home due Thursday on…Thursday, at 1:00am. I took a couple of power naps, as usual, and finished it at about 10:00am. At that time I started studying for my leadership final, which I had to take at 2:00pm. After the final I had dinner and went to my room to watch tv and rest for a while. At about midnight I started working on my presentation, and I finished it at 2:30am, but I had to present at 10:30am, so I woke up at 9:30am and I couldn’t sleep all that much.

Friday and Saturday nights don’t really count. Even though I went to sleep at about 5:30am on both, it wasn’t exactly due to work that had to be done hahaha.

Then, on Sunday I started to write my other take-home, due at noon on Monday. Unfortunately, for this final paper I also had to read two articles. I started reading the first one at about 11pm and when I finished I started reading the second one, but of course I wasn’t reading the whole time because there’s something in my room called a tv, and most recently also a wii. So I ended up going to sleep at about 2:30am and woke up at 7:30am to start writing my essay. But of course, I didn’t actually start writing it until about 8:30 (don’t even ask why). At 11:30am I was done and after turning it in I took a nap for an hour. Then I went to have lunch, played some more wii, and at about 4pm I started studying for my last final, which was at 7:00pm.

Due to all this, I didn’t get as much sleep as I used to. In high school I was able to pull it off because I only had to work on one thing, but college is way different. If you leave something for later you then realize that you’re actually leaving multiple things aside. When you have three major assignments due the same day you simply have to get things done in advance. If you’re anything like me, then you finish one and leave the other two for the day they’re due hahaha.

But seriously now, if you’re anything like me you should probably start working on solving your procrastination issues, specially if you also love sleeping!

The Ball Game

It all started one very boring and unproductive night. I was watching tv in one of my friends room with two other guys and all of a sudden we started tossing around a small, orange plastic ball. Soon enough the objective became to keep the ball going, and the person who dropped it received instant looks of disapproval from everybody else.  Consequently, the tossing of the ball became a process of elimination, by which the person who failed to keep it in the air was immediately out. Even though we were only four people at the time, games became extremely intense. Nobody wanted to lose the game, especially after we started giving a point to the last man standing.

As the night passed, the four of us established ourselves as the creators of The Ball Game, and began to create rules in order to make sure that everyone could play without it being unfair or too complicated. First, The Ball Game starts with all the participants standing up and forming a circle. If you’re not standing up, then you automatically lose.

Since we started playing the game in the lounge of our hall, the most important rule was that, if the ball touched the ceiling after you touched it, you were automatically out. It is important to understand that The Ball Game consists of single-handed touches to the ball that enable it to keep on going. Therefore, sometimes in order to save it from hitting the floor you make an effort, but the ball comes out too strong and hits the ceiling or isn’t directed to anyone. If it hits the ceiling, then you’re out no matter what. On the other hand, if the ball isn’t directed to any specific player (making it a bad pass), but the other player reaches for it and touches it, then the other player is out. If the player acknowledges your pass as a bad one and doesn’t move in any way towards the ball, then you’re out because your pass was horrible!

On the other hand, if your pass goes in the middle of two other players, and neither of the players move towards the ball, then they’re both out because they didn’t make the effort to keep the ball going. Furthermore, if they both go towards the ball, but they are not able to make another pass, there is no elimination.

The only case in which two players can’t go out at the same time is when there are only 3 players left, since there ALWAYS has to be a final. The player who wasn’t in danger on being eliminated goes directly to the final, while the other two play a sudden death.

Sudden death is similar to the final. Two players stand facing each other, but separated by some space in order to allow the tossing of the ball. In the final, even if the other player makes a horrible shot that isn’t directed at you, you have to go for it because if it falls inside your area, you lose! If the ball goes outside your area after the other player hits it, then you win. If the ball hits the ceiling after you hit it, then you lose. The winner gets one point, and then he gets the ball in order to start the next round of… The Ball Game!

As more people saw us playing in the lounge, more people wanted to form part of this wonderful new sport. Some were pretty successful and got a couple of wins on their first day, but me and my other three friends are the creators of the game for a reason. No one has more wins at The Ball Game than any of us. And of course, who do you think has the most amount of wins?? Guess???? Yes…it’s me, 12 wins ahead of the second place, who has won the game about 27 times hahaha.

Anywho…I’m sure the rules to The Ball Game didn’t make much sense to you, even though I tried to explain them as clearly as possible. I know this because they don’t even make sense to me, and I’m one of the creators! Still, if you want to try it you’re more than welcome to start tossing an orange plastic ball around with some of your friends. Maybe during one boring and unproductive night you’ll come up with a game of your own!
