Midterm Madness!

Hello all!

I apologize for not updating you last week – nothing too exciting has been going on except for tests, tests and more tests! I just barely survived my first week of college midterms – yikes! Lucky for me, I only had one long midterm and one mini-midterm, so my week was not as bad as it could have been.

However, I did manage to squeeze a bit of fun into my hectic schedule. On Monday, my friends and I went to see comedian Dave Sedaris at Richmond’s Landmark Theatre downtown in the VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) area. We bought tickets from the University’s Modlin Center, the University’s fine arts department. The Modlin Center is a great resource for cultural events on and off campus because it brings in artists and performers from all around the world and offers discounted tickets to Richmond students. Along with our tickets, we received free charter bus passes to take us to and from the theatre. On our way there, my friends and I got to see many parts of the city that we have yet to explore, including the Fan, downtown Richmond and the VCU area. The more I see Richmond, the more I love it! I love the history behind it and the many historic places still standing. I also love how cute and artsy this city really is! The Landmark Theatre was also beautiful with tile and marble décor remaining from its old state as a mosque. The show was hilarious and it was great to get to see more of Richmond; overall it was a great 3 hour break from studying!

I also had the opportunity to go out into town for dinner this week. I went to Azzurro’s, an Italian restaurant about a five-minute walking distance from UR, with Women in Business, another student organization that I’ve become very involved in. Women in Business invited Rose Hatcher, an executive from Aetna Insurance, to come speak to the group about her business experiences over a nice Italian dinner. It was a great way to learn from an experienced professional in the insurance field and bond with other girls who have similar academic and career interests.

Finally, two long and hard weeks have come to an end and fall break has arrived! Campus is quiet and lonely, but my roommate, Gretchen, and I are both staying here, so at least we have each other. Gretchen and I took advantage of our free weekend to go check out the city. We went shopping in Carytown and Short Pump Mall. We also ate at some great restaurants while we were out. As you can tell, we love food and we love the city! Now, we have two more days left of fall break before school starts up again. I will definitely take advantage of my time off and update you on my adventures next week!
