Happy Fall!

Dearest readers,

Happy first week of fall! Fall is my favorite season of the year, so I’m ecstatic that it’s finally here! I cannot wait for November when the already gorgeous scenery here on campus turns bright, beautiful colors!

This has been an extremely hectic week for me, but it seems as though every week is a hectic week here! I had three tests this week and various student meetings. I’ve become quite involved in Model United Nations, an educational yet fun student group that travels and debates current events! I will get to attend a Model UN conference in Philadelphia. I’ve never been to Pennsylvania, so I’m excited for that trip! Also, I completed my four hours of the required alcohol awareness class this week, so I’m slowly but surely on my way to completing my graduation requirements!

Finally, after a stressful week, I had a chance to leave campus and further explore the city! As you can tell, I love going off campus, even though thoroughly enjoy life on campus ,because I love immersing myself in this new city that will be my home for the next four years. My friend Kailey and I joined the University’s Campus Activities Board on the Richmond City Day trip to the Virginia Holocaust Museum, a small local non-profit art gallery, Carytown, and the Virginia Art Museum. My favorite destination was the VA Art Museum because it reminded me a lot of the National Art Gallery in Washington D.C., one of my favorite art museums of all time. Then, for lunch, Kailey and I enjoyed some great sushi and homemade ice cream on Cary Street. The trip was a great exposure of all the different artists, museums and restaurants that Richmond has to offer. It just opened me up a lot more to the Richmond city life!

Now, it’s back to the grind, studying for upcoming tests this week. Until next time!

Jazz, Madeleine Albright and Proclamation Night!

It really is a sad feeling when you see other people’s parents, siblings, and even grandparents walking around campus and enjoying Family Weekend with one another while your own family is at home. My roommate’s parents were also unable to come down this weekend, so at least we had each other to entertain. Even though our families weren’t here, my roommate and I still kept ourselves pretty busy by participating in many of the Family Weekend events. On Friday night, we attended the Family Weekend concert, a variety concert composed of performances by several of the University’s student music groups including Schola Cantorum and the University Jazz Ensemble. My roommate and I thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to all of the musical talent that’s here on campus and have become such avid fans of the Jazz Ensemble that we created a calendar solely to remind us of the group’s performance dates!

Then on Saturday afternoon, I had the rare opportunity to go hear former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, speak at UR’s very own Camp Concert Hall. Since this event was organized by the Obama for President Campaign in conjunction with the University of Richmond student organization supporting Obama for President, Secretary Albright spoke mainly of Obama’s policies, but her charisma alone captivated an overflowing Camp Concert Hall for more an hour. Listening to Secretary Albright speak live and only twenty feet away from me was probably one of my best experiences thus far at the University of Richmond. Because the University of Richmond does not endorse any candidate, a speaker invitation was extended to the McCain for President Campaign, as well, so hopefully another esteemed speaker will grace the University’s Camp Concert Hall in the near future!

And finally, Proclamation Night rolled around! Every freshman girl dressed in white for the Class of 2012 photo on the Westhampton Green. I have never seen so many girls in white and I have to say, it really is quite a sight against a backdrop of bright green grass and glowing sunlight. After a long process of arranging 400 women to fit into one photo, a sea of waving arms trying to fix hair at the last minute, and finally, a series of camera flashes, we were done with pictures. We then headed off to dinner at the Heilman Dining Hall before going into the Proclamation Night ceremony at the Chapel. The ceremony was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event, since only Westhampton women have the opportunity to experience it. It was a bonding moment shared among freshman women, senior women and freshman and senior women of the University of Richmond. Even though you gradually adapt to the Richmond environment from your first moments here, through orientation and through the first few weeks of classes, it is after attending the Proclamation ceremony that you feel like you have finally joined a long and esteemed line of intelligent Westhampton women.

I guess this weekend did manage to live up to last weekend’s eventfulness! Hopefully the fun and adventures will continue in the upcoming weeks!

And finally, the women of 2012.

Go Spiders!

At 3am this Saturday morning, my friends and I ventured out of the city of Richmond to explore Virginia Beach (a two-hour car ride away from campus). The trip was sponsored by UR’s Intervarsity Club, so there were about 100 Richmond students lying out on VA Beach to watch the sun rise at 5am. I can definitely say that it was a rare site and very cool experience! After watching the sun rise and before heading back to Richmond, my friends and I had breakfast at one of the best pancake houses that we have encountered here in Virginia! We had a good time and were back on campus by 10am – just in time to squeeze in several more hours of sleep before heading off to our first home football game that afternoon. It was my first time attending a college football game and it was exciting to be a part of so much school spirit. Free pizza was served, t-shirts were given out to Richmond students and freshmen who attended the game joined together to form a human tunnel to welcome the football players as they made their grand entrance onto the field.  The stadium was packed with Richmond students and alumni who endlessly cheered on the Spiders through scorching heat to a victory over Towson. The entire afternoon at the game was a huge display of spirit and pride in being a Richmond Spider.

In addition to such an exciting weekend, this week of classes has been pretty eventful, as well. I took my first college exam on Wednesday (Spanish) and am working on my first college essay this weekend (Core class). I also attended a study abroad fair, where representatives from various international schools and programs distribute information to students interested in studying abroad. A major deciding factor for me in choosing to attend the University of Richmond was its exceptional study abroad program, so the fair transformed impressive facts on paper to an even better reality for me. It was exciting to meet with different representatives, learn about the programs that they offer and envision myself at one or more of these places in the near future.

It will take a lot to top off this past week, but hopefully the upcoming week will bring more fun stories. Stay tuned!
