Mike Birbiglia’s Secret Public Tour

Mike Birbiglia!

How do you describe doing one of your favorite things in the world without getting so excited you cause your readers to vomit continuously by continuously saying, “I can’t believe I got to do that!” over and over again. Well, I’ll try to suppress my squealing zeal for the remainder of this posting. OH MY GOD I GOT TO SEE MIKE BIRBIGLIA IN PERSON! I GOT TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH HIM AND LAUGH HYSTERICALLY AT HIS JOKES FOR AN ENTIRE TWO HOURS AND I LOVED IT, I LOVED IT!!! Oh. Oh, boy. Well, now that that’s over, I’ll tell you about my Saturday. The day began as a warm, wonderful, and sweet treat. Taking its time to unfold like the delicate pirouettes of a descending autumn leave—perhaps a lovely blush apple red one—the cardinals and blue jays decided to swarm the campus. (I secret publicly believe this is in an attempt to take it over—and they do eat spiders, probably.) The robins, which I sometimes triumph over in our race against the sun in the early morning, were very busy chasing each other into trees and impressing me with their neck-breaking arcs in MY direction. I have developed my skills of dodging the beautiful blue birds with the red breasts and am now pretty good at it, although occasionally I feel my muscles tense horrible as one swoops in my direction and only barely misses me.

At two, I went to the movie theatre at Short pump using our ever-useful Spider Shuttle. My flavor of the week was a bit of Rocky Road rice ice cream. Okay, really it was The Darjeeling Limited, a story about three brothers who decide to try to reconnect on a spiritual journey across India. And A LOT of crazy randomness, both hilarious and terribly sad, ensues. Get it? Get why I said it was rocky road rice ice cream. Ah ha! No, I know I’m not that funny, hehe. Oh well. So, it was a relaxing couple of hours—I love laughing and crying in movies and I got to do both in the same one, which is always a plus.

Then, I returned to campus and at 7:30, I made my way over to the Camp Concert Hall—a beautiful auditorium where the school presents a number of wonderful performers over the school year—in the Modlin Center. On this particular evening, Mike Birbiglia’s Secret Public tour had the chance to prove itself on our hallowed campus grounds. He, and the two groups that started the program, did not disappoint. In fact, I haven’t laughed that hard in a long while. I cannot remember the first man’s name (I AM SO SO SO VERY SORRY) but that does not mean he wasn’t funny. The second group was a little bit more conspicuous. They formed a “Christian Rock Band” and looked very much like four-year-old boys. They sang hilarious songs about chastity and alcohol abuse (and made them seem like inherently funny concepts) strumming a guitar and a two note xylophone. Then, the big fish splashed out of the water like one of those evasive carp and slapped us all in the face. Mike Birbiglia (the Birbigglebug) is one of my favorite comedians; I have seen all of his television stand-up specials. Naturally, I was not going to miss my opportunity to see him in person. I think I laughed the hardest in the audience (perhaps because I knew what to expect) but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. After he finished, Mike let everyone know that he and the rest of the gang would be available for meeting and photos right in front of the hall. Well, I certainly couldn’t let a chance like that pass me by. Now I’m not photogenic, but I wanted a picture up close and personal. I asked for one and surprise of all surprises, he told me to get in the middle so I got a picture of myself between Mikey and the “Christian Rock Band”. I’m happy right now, if you can tell. One of my favorite things to do in life is watch comedy and I got to meet one of my favorites. It’s all good.

this is the 1st comedian. Leave me a comment if you know his name, please.

This is the “Christian Rock Band” whose title I can’t remember. Aren’t they grand?

I like this picture because the rest of them are so blurry and bouncy and then Mike’s just staring at the camera.

Now, I hate pictures of myself. BUT I MET THE BIRBIGGLEBUG!!! AHHHHHH!!!

Quote of the week:

I spend a lot of time on the road and I like to listen to the music on the radio. But I’ll end up listening to Christian rock…by accident. It’s hard to avoid because they all start out as a Bon Jovi ballad. ‘Well, I woke up this morning and I got myself some oatmeal and I put some raisins on it and….Christ is god. God, God, God.’ I think every religion should have its own rock.”

P.A.M. and S.A.L.S.A.

I am a PAM member here at UR. PAM (or the Peer and Mentor program) pairs up an upper-level student with an entering freshman in the hopes that they will be able to impart their wisdom and warnings and train-wreck college experiences (along with all the great, and safe, ones as well) to the new blood on campus. My mentee is Maria (Marimer) and she is a fantastic person. Out of college life, she calls Peru home and happens to be quite the merengue dancer!

On Thursday night, she invited me to a S.A.L.S.A. event. S.A.L.S.A. stands for Spanish and Latino Students Alliance and it is a club on campus dedicated to sharing hispanic culture with the university and I am very proud to support it since I am Spanish-American…and also because it has a wonderful sense of community. There was a bunch of delicious food, great people—I was surprised I knew so many—and masterful performers. At one point a number of students and a Capoeira master demonstrated the grace and skill involved in learning this Brazilian martial-arts dance-fighting. I got caught up in the music…and clapping my hands (unfortunately I was born without of rhythm)…and singing along to the songs the master sang.

Then, of course, there was my wonderful mentee who bravely and skillfully danced the merengue with her partner and two other sets of partners in front of the cheering crowd. I met a few new people, ate some good salsa, and became strangely adamant and passionately optimistic about taking a capoeira workshop at a nearby community center, even though I have no flexibility or upper-body strength. This should be interesting. I’ll tell you if I break myself. Of course, this is assuming I haven’t broken all my fingers and the hospital allows me to post a blog from their room. Ha!

I love these events because you get to experience a completely different dimension of your friends’ (or of completely strangers’) personalities and lives. I like knowing that I can still be surprised by other people…it adds the spice back into my day.

Caving in West Virginia

Big Cave!! (2nd one of the day). That’s Lee Carleton and Jordan far back there.

This weekend, on October 20th, eight students, including myself, and Lee Carleton went caving in West Virginia. We drove the three hours to the gravel spot wide enough for a car by the road, scampered up the steep slope to the first cave system—very much like a maze—and split up into groups to do a little cave searching for ourselves. We even paused long enough to take pictures and create cave art with the baby poo brown mud lining the walls and floor. My contributions included a pyramid, an alien face, and my initials. I also did some extensive army crawling—some of the passages were only as wide as my shoulders and as tall as my head when I’m flat on my stomach! I had such a blast! Then, we crossed over to another one of the caves. This one, however, was much different, much larger and deeper. I don’t have a fear of heights. I have a fear of paralysis and there were several instances when I was VERY cautious. And shaky, hehe. Descending back to the car, four of us decided to wash some of the muck off of ourselves and crossed to a nearby stream. After much tomfoolery and wetness, we changed back into clean and dry clothes and hit the open road once again. Then, the whole gang went to a little burger joint in Charlottesville, VA and came back to campus refreshed and exhilarated by our exploits in the wilderness.

All in all, a pretty fulfilling day.

You can’t tell it, but I actually know the shadows in the car…left is Oliver and right is Jordan. Jordan claims to be a calm person but secretly is a daredevil driver.

We’re in last place in the race to the caves…but the forest was on fire with the colors of fall. Absolutely beautiful.

Almost everyone who went caving is in this picture…from left to right, Nicki, Zach, Nolan, Ryan, Jordan, Mr. Carleton (in far back), and Oliver. Natsumi is behind me and obviously I’m behind the camera.

I’ve been participating in a number of events for the clubs of which I consider myself a member. On the 19th, Student Voices against Violence (a sexual violence awareness group, formerly known as Stealing Home) conducted its annual Dating show. This time, however, it was titled “Lust or Love” and worked out sort of like the Newlyweds game on television. We had four couples participate to determine whether they had healthy relationships…and the questions were hilarious! The winners received a gift certificate to the Melting Pot—a local fondue hotspot. They were very excited and all four couples did really well.

Pretty soon, there will be a number of other neat events to check out on campus…AND HALLOWEEN IS COMING! My favorite holiday is almost here! YAY!

What’s more, the past few days have been a wonderful reminder of the intricacies of college life. You never realize how big life is until you’re responsible for your own.

Love and peace,

Jordan
