The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is a really nice art museum right next to Carytown. You can take school shuttle or public transportation (you get free bus passes as a Richmond student!) to get here so it is a really convenient spot.
The VMFA is one of the largest art museums in the North America and ranks as one of the top ten comprehensive art museums in the United States (source: Wikipedia, obviously). I was actually surprised that Richmond would have a museum of this scale.
Also, general admission is FREE. Sometimes it feels like you can’t ever do anything fun for free, but this is definitely one of the coolest free things you can do. The special exhibitions aren’t free, but there is a good deal for students. The student membership is $10/year and you get free special exhibition tickets with that. Each special exhibition costs $7, so if you go more than once, you made even! There was a Japanese tattoo exhibition earlier this year, so I bought my membership for that.
Aside from the amazing exhibits, which you can learn more from here http://vmfa.museum/, the museum has a really patio with the coffee shop (which you get discounts for as a member!). The expansive lawns and the patio provide a nice space for relaxing, picnics or just roaming around. Oh, they also have free Wi-Fi (this generation’s priorities).
This summer, there were also cute ducks from somewhere in the pond (oh yea, they have a pond too).
The museum also has an amazing view. How gorgeous!
That's basically how I approach life.
Why UR?I sat in the introductory Philosophy class during my visit and it BLEW my mind. I have been a science kid since forever and always despised studying the humanities (except art!) so it was so strange to actually LOVE one. That is when I realized I wanted to go to a liberal arts college. I WANT to be awed in each and every of my classes, even if they are at 9am.
