The Kamikaze Life

September 19, 2009

This week, I have one prominent theme tying together two main events in my life from this past week. The first event involves my friend, Cameron, and myself. Since coming to Richmond, I haven’t been particularly good at finding a time to workout and exercise. The gym is spectacular, but I’m not really a gym fanatic. I mentioned this the other day to my friends and he mentioned that he was of the same opinion. Having people watch us attempt to run or lift or whatever wasn’t our idea of a good time. So, he mentioned that he likes to run around the lake on-campus. I asked if I could join him and we ended up running together one time last week. We figured that it probably was a good idea to continue, so we founded our own running club. I wanted to name it “The People Who Don’t Run Running Club”, but Cameron came up with a better name that truly reflected what we were doing– “The Kamikazes”. We are basically self-destructing ourselves for no truly great reason. We don’t have a ton of time to go run, but we do about a mile and a half roughly three times a week and are hoping to slowly build it up. And the best time that works for us? Yep, late at night. Ridiculously late at night. In fact, we went for a run last night starting at midnight. We probably will never run a marathon or be good runners, but it’s something that we both have meant to do more of, but never got around to.

The other event representing my Kamikaze life is the Virginia Beach Sunrise Trip. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, of which I am a member, plans a trip every year to Virginia Beach to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. That involves getting up at a ridiculous hour… namely 2:00 AM. We journey through the dark night to watch the great sights, have a breakfast together, and then return home. As I am writing this, I have been awake for eighteen hours and am starting to crash. Because I planned the event, I had plenty of work arranging drivers, directions, and everything else. We had roughly eighty people go and a vast majority of them were International Students who had never been to the Atlantic Ocean before. It’s a fun event but absolutely exhausting for myself as a driver and planner, which makes it tie into my Kamikaze theme. Below is a promotional video that my friends and I made for the trip. We’re quite proud of it.

Semester Review

May 2009

Another semester is officially in the books. I am now halfway through my college life. Yikes!!! Where is the time going? As I always do, though, I would like to take the chance to reflect on this semester and see exactly what I was up to. So let’s begin.

I continued to attend my share of cultural events at the Modlin Center on-campus. This semester, I saw MOMIX, Garrison Keillor, Cirque Eloize, the Five Browns and our spring musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. All of them were quite entertaining. One of the best parts was that they were all very cheap, often either free or only $8.

Besides cultural acts coming to campus, we also had several other big names come to visit. We had Chris Hansen of “To Catch a Predator” as well as John Bolton, the former United States ambassador to the United Nations. Both were very interesting to listen to. We also had Guster come to campus, but I could not attend their show.

I suppose I shouldn’t go too far without talking about academics. I took six classes for five units and they kept me plenty busy: Managerial Accounting, Business Statistics, Critical Thinking, Research Methods, Group Dynamics, and Rhetoric Theory and Pedagogy. It’s great to be a business major right now because our Business School soared to #12 in the nation this semester, being tied for #1 in the nation for academic quality. Very impressive. I survived all of my classes with pleasing grades, which is always a plus. Just for the fun of it, I calculated from my master calendar that I have read 2,144 pages of readings, articles, and textbooks and also written 115 pages of essays and reports. I think that’s pretty impressive. My favorite study place is in my dorm’s hallway (it’s a long story) and I actually attracted quite a following out there by the end of the semester.

To destress from any of those papers or readings, I made sure I had my fair share of fun. I went to see “Role Models”, “Quantum of Solace”, “Seven Pounds”, and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” in our Commons. My friends and I also made frequent trips to Capital Ale House for Dollar Burger Nights, basketball games, a cappella concerts, and the intramural fields for some sand volleyball. I also went to a sorority social, competed in a 24-hour scavenger hunt, and went to the North American Squash Championships on-campus, just to name a few more events.

My organizations, however, have provided me with plenty of entertainment and work as well. I plan all events for InterVarsity, so I can vouch for this. We held events including an apartment dance party, square dance, medallion hunt, Murder Mystery Dinner, Valentine’s Dinner, and Super Bowl party, just to name a few. We also reinvented our large group worship service and rejuvenated our Spring Retreat by going to Virginia Beach and staying at a hotel on the ocean. Too many fun memories and events to continue on any more.

My leadership on the Collegiate Disaster Relief Team consumed roughly as much time as InterVarsity. We went to New Orleans for an Alternative Spring Break and had a great trip. All of the participants were amazing people and we accomplished a lot of great work. We did work ranging from demolition to painting to sheetrocking, all while completing numerous learning components.

Last but not least, we had several campus-wide events that worth noting. I’ll let the pictures explain them as I begin to look ahead to my last two years here at UR.

Fun Final Year-End Comment:

I made a wall hanging of the Richmond crest before I came to UR and there are eight pockets in each of the red squares. So, as this academic school year has gone on, I’ve put little trinkets in there to remind me of fun events throughout the year. Now that the school year is over, I had to take everything out, but it was actually very fun to do that. This year’s banner included notes from our weekly Methodist lunches, a pack of liquid-filled Gummies from InterVarsity’s Halloween Party, a Relay for Life pin, a Christmas ornament from a friend, a figurine someone gave me on the Spring Break Trip, the medallion from the InterVarsity Medallion Hunt, a Wisconsin magnet from a care package from home, and a completed calendar of second semester’s assignments.

DONE!!!!!

April 30, 2009

Hey there prospectives. I’m sorry for neglecting you for almost two weeks. I feel as though I have a legitimate excuse, though. I was studying for finals. Finals have been this entire week and I am finally done!!! I had five finals this week with four of those occuring within a span of thirty-one hours. I walked out of one to simply start studying for the next one. It was basically a marathon, but composed of many sprints. I think everyone on-campus is worn down right now. We had to peak for the last two weeks with year-end projects and culminating papers, then we had the illusion of coming down from that peak for a weekend. However, we were forced to peak our performance again with finals this week. It’s been exhausting, but that’s finals for you.

It’s all done, though, so it’s time to celebrate. My birthday is tomorrow and I hope to have some fun. Upcoming is a week at an InterVarsity retreat called Rockbridge, a week home, then I am abroad for the summer. It will be the first time that I have left the United States. I will spend one month at Saint Louis University in Madrid taking courses in Finance and Business Law. Then, I will take the opportunity to do something I’ve always wanted to do–travel Europe. So, the following forty days will be spent backpacking on my own through eight Western European countries using the Eurail system and hostels. The current itinerary is as follows, spending roughly three days in each of the following cities:

Hudson, Wisconsin-> Madrid, Spain -> Barcelona, Spain-> Chamonix, France-> Paris, France-> Normandy, France-> Amsterdam, Netherlands-> Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Germany-> Munich, Germany-> Vienna, Austria-> Bern, Switzerland-> Interlaken, Switzerland-> Venice, Italy-> Siena (Tuscany), Italy-> Rome, Italy-> Bari, Italy-> Athens, Greece-> Santorini, Greece -> Hudson, Wisconsin

I am hoping to keep blogging through the summer and keep you updated on my travels as I go. So, that should be an exciting summer, but it means that I have a very short period of time to get ready. Uh oh.

Before I go any further, I have to share a video I just found that is really cool and also quite relavent. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you watch it. It’s a video asking University of Richmond students “What is your passion?”. See if you can spot me. Definitely worth the watch.

“What is your passion?”

Besides studying and packing these past two weeks, I did get the chance to get out and have some fun. An emerging theme of the past two weeks was that of a Culinary Tour de Richmond. Last Friday night was spent hanging out with friends and going out for ice cream at Bruster’s. This past weekend found me at the Cheesecake Factory on Sunday afternoon. We went there as a church group to say goodbye to our graduating senior and to celebrate the end of the semester. The food was fantastic and my pasta carbonara was amazing. That same evening, my scholar group went to Bertucci’s for another Italian feast. Once again, great food and a fun way to end the semester. We had pizza, cheesy bread, antipasti, several pasta dishes, tiramisu, canolis, and gelato. My last stop was at Coldstone on Tuesday evening to celebrate with some of my scholar friends and to wish the seniors good luck. Plus, I personally celebrated finishing my first four finals.

Lastly, my friends and I from my church helped out with Rebuilding Together, which is a city-wide event that aims to help fix-up homes in Richmond. So, my friends and I spent Saturday afternoon painting the shed of an elderly couple in need.

It’s time to end the semester now. I’ll post a recap of my semester in a week or two. To end this post, though, here’s several random pictures from the past two weeks:
