All I Want for Christmas is a National Championship

December 8, 2008

As I had hoped, I had a relatively relaxing weekend as I geared up for this week of finals. Sure, I studied during most of my free time, but I was alright with that. Of my five finals (a 12 page paper, a 9 page paper, an 8 page paper, an in-class Software Tools test, and an in-class Accounting test), I have three done. All I have left is the twelve page paper and the Accounting test due Friday. I can make it. I hope.

In the process of studying for these finals, I ran into roommate conflicts. We have been coexisting alright for the semester, but were forced together due to the nature of the program we were living in. Anyways, we both went to bed at 4:00 AM on Friday night (I know, that’s even late for me). I woke up at 11:30 AM, but he kept on sleeping until 5:30 PM. So, I was stuck writing my paper in the hallway because he was still sleeping in the room and I wanted to keep the lights off out of courtesy. That night, I went to bed at 4:00 AM (Once again, I know this is late). My roommate was still away at the library. I woke up at 9:15 AM for church and, just as I was waking up, my roommate returned to the room and went to bed. Once again, I could not work in our room once I returned from church through the afternoon since he was still asleep. Simply put, I am getting annoyed of his continuing pattern of sleeping past 3:00 PM and my inability to use my own room as a result. It’ll be good to get away and have my own room over break. That is, if my parents haven’t given it away to the dog like last year.

Anyways, enough with finals and academics. This was my fun weekend. Friday night was spent at a Rockapella holiday concert at the Modlin Center. It was a good show. Rockapella is the singing group that performed the theme song for “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?” as well as the classic Folgers commercial. Though they didn’t do as many traditional Christmas songs as I would have liked and they also were a bit too “boy bandish” for me, it was still a nice way to spend an evening. I mean, how can you beat a concert by a famous singing group for only $8? After the show, two of my friends and I hung out in our residence hall’s lounge. Before we knew it, we had attracted quite a crowd and we had been their over three hours. It was so nice to simply relax and chat with friends I hadn’t been able to see too much.

Saturday brought the quarterfinals of the playoffs for our football team. I had purchased a ticket to go on the fan bus to Appalachian State, but it left at 5:00 AM and didn’t return until 10:00 PM. I didn’t think I could devote that much time away from homework, so I pulled out at the last minute. Part of it was the homework aspect, but I also went last year to this exact stadium for the National Semifinal game and we suffered a heartbreaking loss. I wasn’t sure I could handle that again. I now regret the decision to not go because I didn’t get as much work done as I had hoped and it was a fantastic game. We won 33-13 and it was a huge upset. Appalachian State was the back-to-back-to-back National Champions. We snapped their 13-game post-season win streak. Even better, Appalachian State had only lost one home game out of the past 43. It was a fantastic game to watch, even though I watched on TV instead of in person. We forced seven turnovers and didn’t give any up. Additionally, this team’s quarterback (who RUSHED for 314 yards against us in last year’s playoff game) was able to do next to nothing on the ground. Because of the win, we will play Northern Iowa in the National Semifinals this coming weekend. I would love to go, but doubt there is any way that could possibly happen. I missed out on this game’s fan bus, but don’t plan to make that mistake again. I constantly saw my friends on ESPN’s coverage and kept thinking that I could have been there.

However, I was able to attend the InterVarsity Lead Team Christmas party because I was in Richmond on Saturday night. Our campus minister invited us to her house for dinner and dessert, as well as a white elephant gift exchange. I initially began with a jar of pig’s feet but upgraded to a plastic massager and a staple-less stapler. I was intrigued by both.

Finally, Sunday night was devoted to the Lakeview Holiday Celebration. My friend and I have been planning this for some time and simply wanted a chance to relax and celebrate the holidays with friends. So, we went shopping for Christmas treat ingredients and then made rolled sugar cookies, Chex mix, chocolate mint brownies, and fudge. On top of that, we had egg nog to go with it. Making the night perfect, we watched Home Alones 1&2. The Home Alone movies are some of my favorite movies of all time and it was so much fun to watch them again with friends while enjoying the tasty Christmas treats. The last thing on our minds were the upcoming finals. We created plates of the leftovers and left them for the students who were staying up late studying for finals.

That’s all for now. The Christmas season continues to descend upon campus as the temperatures drop and the snow begins to fall. You most likely will not hear from me until after finals have finished and I am back home. I want to wish you a happy holiday season if you do not hear from me by then. Take care and God bless.

2 Days, 2 Nights, 2 Much Fun : 222

This past stretch has been quite an adventure to get through, but I have finally made it to Thanksgiving Break. I am not going home like seemingly every other student. Instead, I am going to New York City to hang out with three of my friends from high school who all attend school along the East Coast.

Like I said, though, it’s been quite the stretch to get to this point. I worked very hard on a paper for Campaigns 2008 that dealt with a reform issue for several days last week. For my topic, I supported online voting. I’m happy with the paper and am glad to have it done. It wasn’t even due until early December!!! I also had a major Accounting test last Friday. I haven’t done as well in that class as I would have hoped, so I wanted to study extra long. As my professor recommended, I studied ten hours. That is a lot of information being pounded into my head regarding treasury bonds, amortization of interest, stocks, and so much more. I claimed the classroom in my residence hall as my own for hours on end in order to study. When I left to get a quick snack, I returned to find a mini bag of skittles and a Snickers bar from a mysterious someone on top of my books. It really made my day. I took the test and realized I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, but this class’ tests are hard. I’m afraid I might have to abandon any hopes of an A in that class, which is basically the first time I have ever had to do that in my academic career. I’m slowly coming to the realization that perfection is nearly impossible. Still, I did fantastic on another paper I got back for another class, which made my day.

Also, our football team has made the playoffs. Only sixteen teams from across the country make it. My friends and I thought we had lost this past weekend, thus eliminating us from any chance of the playoffs. We led 20-0 at one point, yet managed to let it slip away. The telephone sports information desk reported that we had lost 23-20 in overtime. However, we had actually gotten the field goal and won. So, we look ahead to a return to the playoffs. Our basketball team also opened especially strong, almost knocking off a well-ranked Syracuse team. Almost. I also discovered that Kevin Smith, one of our basketball players, made ESPN’s Top Ten Plays for his dunk at Spider Mayhem a few weeks ago. He was the #1 Play of the Day. Here it is:

An amazing dunk

The main thing of late, though, is 222. This is a conference through InterVarsity that took place in Hampton, Virginia. It brings InterVarsity chapters from all over Virginia together. There are several tracts and I chose Leadership, naturally. It was a great tract for me. It discussed burnout, our motives for leadership as well as our methods. Most importantly, it brought up the difference between things that are urgent and things that are important. Overall, it was a really great event. I was on the fence for a long time, but finally decided to go. Despite it being classes and lectures for a good share of the weekend, it was great to get away with friends. We stayed in an amazing hotel and basically let ourselves go. We were all tired from a long week of work and it showed. We had pillow fights, jumped on the beds, held a dance party, did a Sonic run (my first time ever), and so much more. I’ll let pictures do the rest of the talking for me.

Introducing Jenna to Chick-fil-A for the first time

The game Trainwreck was one of the highlights of the weekend. The way it works is one person is in the middle and everyone else forms a circle around them. The middle person says something that is true about themself. If it is true about anyone else, they must get up and switch chairs. The person left without a place to sit is stuck in the middle and starts the process over again. It gets quite intense. I have battle wounds from this game. Anyways, it was so much fun because we learned very interesting things about some of the people in the group. One of the highlights included our leader, who is a male, admitting that he cried during the move “Casper”. Another highlight was someone admitting that, when sick as a child, he became confused and told his parents that he was an aphrodisiac. That’s all I’ve got for now. Enjoy some turkey for me and have a great Thanksgiving.

Approaching the End

Howdy! Thanksgiving seems to be right around the corner and I am so ready for it. How about you? For me, this week didn’t have too many major projects, but that was perfectly fine with me. I was able to hang out with my friends and attend a performance by our hip-hop dance group on Friday night, the Multicultural Student Union’s Quiz Bowl on Saturday night, as well as “The Dark Knight” at the Pier on Sunday night. I also made it to the football game and men’s basketball game this weekend. We won both quite handily. The football team beat last year’s National Championship runner-ups 31-14 and limited them to 54 total yards of offense, a new school record.

I was also officially inducted into the Jepson School of Leadership Studies this past week at a ceremony called Prelude. Even though I feel confident about Leadership Studies and my other concentrations, I still went to an event sponsored by my residence hall that focused on how to discover your career. It was fun to see how a lot of famous people have college majors completely different than their careers such as Tiger Woods in Economics and Brad Pitt in Journalism. After the event, I thought it would still be a good idea to stop by our Career Development Center just to make sure I am on the right path. It turns out that I am just fine for a sophomore. However, the one thing I should start doing now is creating a resume. The last thing that I will mention about academics is that I finally have the film from my Rhetoric speeches. As promised, here is one of the speeches that I spent such a long time on. This speech is an epideictic speech that extols a certain virtue:

My epideictic speech

It’s good that I had a bit more free time this week, because I started something new this week. I joined InterVarsity’s C-Team. C-Team is InterVarsity’s core leadership which meets once a week and includes a representative from each of the separate branches. Since the leader of my department, Community Team, is going abroad in the spring, I will take her place. To ease the transition, I started attending meetings this week. It’s one more thing on my plate, but I saw it coming and am excited for it.

There was an event this week, through InterVarsity, that has been a lot of fun for me. It was a Medallion Hunt and I was in charge of it. The way it works is that I hide an object on campus and then release a clue to its location, in the form of a riddle, each day until it is finally found. The clues get more and more specific every day until it has become obvious. Since I couldn’t find a medallion, I had to use a glass starfish instead. There has been a fantastic response thus far and it has created a lot of excitement among my friends, which was very encouraging to see. I will release Clue #6 next and I fully expect someone to find it today. Here are two of the clues that I created and released. The answers are at the very bottom of this post:

Clue #3:
Spark, ignite; Insubstantial, faint; Well-illuminated, sunny:
Affix, display; Lookout, position; Mail, send:

Clue #5:
Spy___, Col___, Tail___, Trooper___, Water___

I would like to finish this post by reminding all of the prospective students that I am glad to answer any questions that you may have about the University of Richmond. I participated in an Admissions Chat on Tuesday and hope that it was helpful for whomever participated. There is a “Contact Me” link on the right-hand side of this web page. I will try to respond to your questions as soon as possible.
