A Thanksgiving to Remember

November 30, 2008

The past five days I have been in New York City hanging out with friends for Thanksgiving Break. It was a much-needed break and I am not ready to return to the real world. For yet another break, I have decided that it would not be worth it to go home, so I reunited with my high school friends from all across the East Coast. I joined up with brothers Carson and Caleb (attending the United States Naval Academy in Maryland and United States Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut respectively), Dan (attending Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania) and Anna (attending St. John’s University in New York City). The first day was spent running around the city collecting one person at a time as we all arrived via separate methods of transportation. Over the next few days, we visited Chinatown, Central Park, Times Square, and many other places. Amazingly, I ran into someone from UR who lives on my floor while visiting Chinatown. I had no idea he was going to be in New York, so that was such a crazy coincidence. Our group didn’t do as much sightseeing as in the past and we were content to simply hang out with each other. That could also have something to do with the fact that we are all college students trying to get by financially. On Thanksgiving Day, we got up at 4:45 AM and sat in the cold for three hours in order to get good seats for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was really fun and all of the floats were much better in person than on TV. My friends are huge fans of Miley Cyrus, so seeing her at the parade made their entire weekend. After that, we returned to our hotel in Queens and grabbed Thanksgiving lunch at McDonalds. However, we did go back into Manhattan for Thanksgiving dinner at a fantastic Italian restaurant. They even had turkey. After that, we went to the M&M’s store and simply had fun being kids. Overall, it was a fun weekend and, even though I didn’t get to see my family, it was nice to reunite with friends. Still, my main consolation in having this break end is that it brings me that much closer to going home for Christmas. Since so much happened and our group combined for over 500 pictures, here is a photographic recap of my Thanksgiving Break with some of my favorite photos:

2 Days, 2 Nights, 2 Much Fun : 222

This past stretch has been quite an adventure to get through, but I have finally made it to Thanksgiving Break. I am not going home like seemingly every other student. Instead, I am going to New York City to hang out with three of my friends from high school who all attend school along the East Coast.

Like I said, though, it’s been quite the stretch to get to this point. I worked very hard on a paper for Campaigns 2008 that dealt with a reform issue for several days last week. For my topic, I supported online voting. I’m happy with the paper and am glad to have it done. It wasn’t even due until early December!!! I also had a major Accounting test last Friday. I haven’t done as well in that class as I would have hoped, so I wanted to study extra long. As my professor recommended, I studied ten hours. That is a lot of information being pounded into my head regarding treasury bonds, amortization of interest, stocks, and so much more. I claimed the classroom in my residence hall as my own for hours on end in order to study. When I left to get a quick snack, I returned to find a mini bag of skittles and a Snickers bar from a mysterious someone on top of my books. It really made my day. I took the test and realized I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, but this class’ tests are hard. I’m afraid I might have to abandon any hopes of an A in that class, which is basically the first time I have ever had to do that in my academic career. I’m slowly coming to the realization that perfection is nearly impossible. Still, I did fantastic on another paper I got back for another class, which made my day.

Also, our football team has made the playoffs. Only sixteen teams from across the country make it. My friends and I thought we had lost this past weekend, thus eliminating us from any chance of the playoffs. We led 20-0 at one point, yet managed to let it slip away. The telephone sports information desk reported that we had lost 23-20 in overtime. However, we had actually gotten the field goal and won. So, we look ahead to a return to the playoffs. Our basketball team also opened especially strong, almost knocking off a well-ranked Syracuse team. Almost. I also discovered that Kevin Smith, one of our basketball players, made ESPN’s Top Ten Plays for his dunk at Spider Mayhem a few weeks ago. He was the #1 Play of the Day. Here it is:

An amazing dunk

The main thing of late, though, is 222. This is a conference through InterVarsity that took place in Hampton, Virginia. It brings InterVarsity chapters from all over Virginia together. There are several tracts and I chose Leadership, naturally. It was a great tract for me. It discussed burnout, our motives for leadership as well as our methods. Most importantly, it brought up the difference between things that are urgent and things that are important. Overall, it was a really great event. I was on the fence for a long time, but finally decided to go. Despite it being classes and lectures for a good share of the weekend, it was great to get away with friends. We stayed in an amazing hotel and basically let ourselves go. We were all tired from a long week of work and it showed. We had pillow fights, jumped on the beds, held a dance party, did a Sonic run (my first time ever), and so much more. I’ll let pictures do the rest of the talking for me.

Introducing Jenna to Chick-fil-A for the first time

The game Trainwreck was one of the highlights of the weekend. The way it works is one person is in the middle and everyone else forms a circle around them. The middle person says something that is true about themself. If it is true about anyone else, they must get up and switch chairs. The person left without a place to sit is stuck in the middle and starts the process over again. It gets quite intense. I have battle wounds from this game. Anyways, it was so much fun because we learned very interesting things about some of the people in the group. One of the highlights included our leader, who is a male, admitting that he cried during the move “Casper”. Another highlight was someone admitting that, when sick as a child, he became confused and told his parents that he was an aphrodisiac. That’s all I’ve got for now. Enjoy some turkey for me and have a great Thanksgiving.

Approaching the End

Howdy! Thanksgiving seems to be right around the corner and I am so ready for it. How about you? For me, this week didn’t have too many major projects, but that was perfectly fine with me. I was able to hang out with my friends and attend a performance by our hip-hop dance group on Friday night, the Multicultural Student Union’s Quiz Bowl on Saturday night, as well as “The Dark Knight” at the Pier on Sunday night. I also made it to the football game and men’s basketball game this weekend. We won both quite handily. The football team beat last year’s National Championship runner-ups 31-14 and limited them to 54 total yards of offense, a new school record.

I was also officially inducted into the Jepson School of Leadership Studies this past week at a ceremony called Prelude. Even though I feel confident about Leadership Studies and my other concentrations, I still went to an event sponsored by my residence hall that focused on how to discover your career. It was fun to see how a lot of famous people have college majors completely different than their careers such as Tiger Woods in Economics and Brad Pitt in Journalism. After the event, I thought it would still be a good idea to stop by our Career Development Center just to make sure I am on the right path. It turns out that I am just fine for a sophomore. However, the one thing I should start doing now is creating a resume. The last thing that I will mention about academics is that I finally have the film from my Rhetoric speeches. As promised, here is one of the speeches that I spent such a long time on. This speech is an epideictic speech that extols a certain virtue:

My epideictic speech

It’s good that I had a bit more free time this week, because I started something new this week. I joined InterVarsity’s C-Team. C-Team is InterVarsity’s core leadership which meets once a week and includes a representative from each of the separate branches. Since the leader of my department, Community Team, is going abroad in the spring, I will take her place. To ease the transition, I started attending meetings this week. It’s one more thing on my plate, but I saw it coming and am excited for it.

There was an event this week, through InterVarsity, that has been a lot of fun for me. It was a Medallion Hunt and I was in charge of it. The way it works is that I hide an object on campus and then release a clue to its location, in the form of a riddle, each day until it is finally found. The clues get more and more specific every day until it has become obvious. Since I couldn’t find a medallion, I had to use a glass starfish instead. There has been a fantastic response thus far and it has created a lot of excitement among my friends, which was very encouraging to see. I will release Clue #6 next and I fully expect someone to find it today. Here are two of the clues that I created and released. The answers are at the very bottom of this post:

Clue #3:
Spark, ignite; Insubstantial, faint; Well-illuminated, sunny:
Affix, display; Lookout, position; Mail, send:

Clue #5:
Spy___, Col___, Tail___, Trooper___, Water___

I would like to finish this post by reminding all of the prospective students that I am glad to answer any questions that you may have about the University of Richmond. I participated in an Admissions Chat on Tuesday and hope that it was helpful for whomever participated. There is a “Contact Me” link on the right-hand side of this web page. I will try to respond to your questions as soon as possible.
