Oh Happy Days

November 17th

Joy to the World! It’s almost Christmas. Well, close enough. I just put up Christmas lights around my room last night and it’s almost Thanksgiving. I can’t wait. Once again, I am being a horrible person and not going home over break. Instead, I am going to visit my best friend from high school who is at the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. We’re going to spend three days exploring New York City. I’m excited. You know what else I’m excited about: LIFE. This week has been really good for me. I’ve been in an unusually good mood throughout this week for the most part. I think my happiness has a direct correlation to the amount of homework I have. Yep, this week has been fairly light for homework for me. Let’s explore this past week together, shall we.

Even though it was light homework. I did have a seven-page paper due in Public Policy on No Child Left Behind, tailoring it to my home state of Wisconsin. I spent a lot of time trying to finish it in time. I thought it was due Monday, but later found out that the teacher had switched it to Tuesday. That was good since it gave me more time to edit and proofread. Also, it meant that I didn’t have to pull an all-nighter on Monday. Instead, I came close on Sunday. The paper was the first choice of three papers. I wanted to get it done with and have free time later. So, I chose Education over Abortion and Global Warming. That was about the only intensive homework I had all week. I worked ahead in Economics and have now finished all of the readings and homework through the end of the year. Hallelujah.

After I last left you, I went to see our Men’s Basketball Home Opener. Our fan group, the Richmond Rowdies, supplied barbecue sandwiches, food, drinks, T-shirts, and prizes. My friend won an iPhone. We were winning by ten with two minutes left in the game. However, we blew it and lost on a three-pointer with .2 seconds left in the game. Oh well. Our football team was ranked 8th and beat the 6th ranked team in the nation, Delaware. However, we had to go to 5 overtimes to do it. The final score was 62-56. We won our division and should make the playoffs easily. I’m excited. We are now ranked 7th in the nation in Division 1 AA.

I spent all of the first half trying to make an awesome paper airplane for a contest. I lost.

Our dorm threw a social on Saturday night. It was poorly attended, but I went for a while and talked to some of the RAs who were throwing it. They’re nice people. After that, I broke out Catchphrase and played it with some of my friends.

I have spent a lot of time lately with Jimmy from Boston. Here he is eating his cottage cheese.

For Sunday, I went to church. After months of searching, I think I found the one that I will end up going to all of the time now. It’s called River Road UMC and it has a special contemporary service called “The Well”. Normally, people don’t get up until noon on the weekends here. This church service starts at 9:45. Yeah, that seems early to me.

D-Hall did an amazing job on Monday. Once in a while, they have a theme night for food. This time it was Greek night, they had gyros, baklava, and so many other awesome foods. They had huge tables of cheese, humus, and every other Greek food imaginable. It was awesome. They decorated D-Hall and it was pretty cool. On Thursday, they had Thanksgiving for us and I was very impressed.

Now that I am off of the Homecoming Committee for Student Government, I can once again attend the Freshmen Guys Bible Study. The attendance has dwindled and it was only me, two of my friends, and our leader at this meeting. We had a good discussion though. On a side note, I’ve noticed an increase in the Christian music that I listen to on my computer. I guess that it gives me a small break from my busy life.

I also hosted a student as part of the Minority Overnight Visitation Experience (MOVE). Micah from Pennsylvania stayed with me. I’m afraid that I was a poor host since I had a ton of homework to do and did that most of the night. So, he had to resort to watching a lot of football on TV (which is normal for Sundays here). However, I do think he had a good time.

Speaking of football, did any catch that Packers vs Vikings game? Yeah, neither did I. When I lived on the Wisconsin/Minnesota border I could never watch a Packers game because the Vikings were shown on TV instead. Here, the Redskins dominate TV. It’s frustrating, but I hear it was a great game. I had to track it on the Internet. Brett Favre=MVP.

Student Government held a joint meeting this week. The men and the women were together and the discussion became quite heated as everyone talked about what role we should play in certain issues on campus.

I participated in another Psychology experiment this week. I answered questions on relationships in my life. In return, I was put into a raffle for $50. These experiments usually pay you some money and it’s really easy, so I try to do as many as I can. The money is also nice since I went shopping this week again and spent more than I had planned.

Three of my good friends participated in our play this year. It was “Macbeth” and they did a good job. It was set in World War 1 and I know that my friends put a lot of time into it. They had a twelve hour rehearsal the other day and it seems like they can never do anything most nights because they’re always practicing for “Macbeth”. I got ten of my friends to come with me and we bought flowers for our friends who performed. I treated my friend Buddy to dinner at the Cellar, our on-campus pub and restaurant, after the show.

This has been my week in review and I shall let you know how next week progresses. I only have four more classes total for Public Policy and finals and Winter Break will be here before I know it. I’ve cut back slightly in the activities I’ve done. I wish I could have gone to see Tim Young, a comedian performing at UR for free, a barn dance, and several other events on-campus. However, I had other things going on at those times. Maybe, I’ll continue to cut back and try to keep my life in a manageable state of frenziness. That’s how I like it.

Thought to Ponder: Why is it that stealing ideas from one person is considered plagiarism; while stealing from many is considered research?

Shout Outs: Doug for driving me to NY, Micah for putting up with me as a host, Caleb, Jimmy, and my friends in “Macbeth”: Buddy, Katie, and Kelly.

FIRE!!!

November 12th

Yesterday, my dorm room caught on fire! Well…. it was actually the popcorn in the microwave in my room that caught on fire. Regardless, it is a day later and I still smell the burning stench cover our room. It all began when I was walking back from writing a paper in the library. About forty yards from Gray Court, I smelled some smoke in the air. I ran into my roommate twenty yards later and he said that he needed to tell me something. I asked if it had anything to do with the smell and he said yes. Our suitemate wanted to pop popcorn in our microwave, but didn’t watch it and it had spontaneously combusted when he was not looking. Fortunately, the fire was quickly put out and the fire alarm did not go off. Once I got inside my dorm and first walked down my hallway, I saw a slight haze permeate all of it. It reeked and the smell has still not left our dorm yet. Today, I went to put on a sweatshirt outside of class and smelled the results of the fire on my sweatshirt. After being in the dorm a few minutes, you don’t notice the smell anymore. It was quite an experience and I thought that you might like to read about it.

Thought to Ponder: So, what’s the speed of dark?

KIDNAPPED!!!

November 9, 2007

Hello World, I am currently in the process of being kidnapped…. Well not exactly. I promised that today would be dedicated to a seven-page paper on No Child Left Behind for my Public Policy class. That plan was going great until my friends called me and invited me to go play airsoft with them at my friend’s house. They kept harassing me and finally grabbed me. That may be slightly exaggerated and I might have had some choice, but it’s the basic gist. So, I am writing this in the car on the way to play airsoft.

When I last left you, the Packers were 6-1. Now, we are 7-1. Other less important events this week were quite plentiful as well. I attended Lionheart on Monday. I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew that they sang Gregorian chants, but little else. They were technically good, but I was slightly bored. I had no idea it could take someone so long to sing just one word.A fraternity threw a cultural event that I attended. It was the service fraternity and they put on a Senior Citizen’s Prom. Senior citizens from the area were brought to campus and we had lots of good food, a jazz band of Richmond professors, and a Prom King and Queen as we recreate Prom for them. The elderly had a lot of fun and I was very surprised at how nice the event looked.

For Student Government, we had a dress down meeting, which was awesome, since we always have to wear full suits. We talked about student concerns and I introduced our first freshmen event. It will be a poker night and showing of some manly TV show. The highlight of the meeting was my receiving of an award. The secretary chooses random awards to give to people. I received the “McLovin Award” for”carrying out duties with ease and showmanship”. I didn’t really understand what it meant until I watched “Superbad” last night at the Pier for free, since it was CAB’s weekly movie screening.

I registered for my second semester classes this week. I got into all of the classes that I wanted and have quite a range of them. I will take Macroeconomics, CORE, Foundations of Sculpture, Foundations of Leadership Studies, and Calculus 2. I had not intended to take Calculus 2, but a friend of mine encouraged me to do it and I enjoyed math in high school. Another motivation was the possibility of research during the summer. There is a program called LURE which allows freshmen and sophomores to research math during the summer. I would live on campus in the apartments with my friends. Also, I plan to apply to be a tour guide during the summer for all of you who want to visit during the summer. I would go home for a while, but it appears as though my summer will be quite busy here on campus. Speaking of being a tour guide, I was able to observe several tours this week in preparation for me leading my own. I’m excited to start leading my own and hope that I can do a good job.

On Thursday night, our a cappella groups performed for a Thanksgiving benefit concert. We have four a cappella groups and they are all very good. I’m thinking about buying their CDs and have already put their next concerts on my calendar. After the concert, one of my fellow scholars that I met in Chicago asked if I wanted to go to dinner. So, I went to the Cellar for the first time. The Cellar is our on campus bar and grill. It’s a fun place and it was a blast to just share funny stories with him and enjoy a nice meal.

My printer has been out of commission for two months now and I was too lazy to call Tech Support and get it fixed, since I assumed it would take weeks to fix. Anyways, I called them at 3PM on Monday afternoon. They were very nice and agreed to send me a replacement. At 10:00 AM the next morning, I received an e-mail saying that I had an overnight package waiting for me. It was the printer. In the span of 24 hours, I called them, received the replacement, and shipped them my old one. I can now live again now that I have my printer!!!In academia, I had a Spanish test that I kind of forgot to study for, readings on Karl Marx for CORE, and more of the same old in Economics. I have now worked ahead in these three classes and have focused my weekend solely on Public Policy and finishing my paper on Education. This “kidnapping” has thrown quite a kink in my plans. With a fair amount of work and social events galore, people ask when I sleep. I actually do sleep quite a bit, although unintentionally. I have a bad habit of convincing myself it’s OK to lie down on my bed and do homework. The next thing I know, I am waking up with my textbook open at 8 AM, just in time to go to class. I often just fall asleep doing homework, which happened a lot in high school too. I don’t have any caffeine from coffee or energy drinks like most people, so I need to find a way to function late at night.

pb0636482.jpg
My friend, Kelly, is often exhausted as well. She comes to our room for coffee.

Finally, I must comment on what I do for fun. Yes, there are a lot of social events on campus, but I have a bad habit of watching TV. Since I never can actually watch TV when the shows are on, I watch the online episodes. So, I have found new shows that I watch every week for fun. The main shows are “Aliens in America” (which is set in Wisconsin), “Phenomenon”, “Surivivor”, and “Kid Nation”. I try to catch “The Office” and “House” as often as I can. However, I never miss an episode of “The Amazing Race”. This looks like a lot of time wasted, but I don’t watch them all every week. Because they’re online, they are shorter due to the lack of commercials, but they are also available to me whenever I want to watch them. That has been my week and I hope that this weekend continues to go well with our basketball home opener tonight and me hosting a prospective student tomorrow. Wish me luck and I’ll make sure to keep you updated on the many events in my life.

Thought to Ponder: Why do we leave expensive cars in the driveway, when we keep worthless junk in the garage?

Shout Outs: Canon Tech Support for fixing my printer so fast, everyone who was on the tours that I helped give, teachers and counselors from Hudson High School
