Halloween and Homecoming

November 4, 2007

What a week! Homecoming has come and gone and I have been very involved with it since I am on the Homecoming Committee for Student Government. As part of our festivities, we held a Car Smash (which was halted by police due to safety hazards), a free wing night at Buffalo Wild Wings, a Homecoming Formal, and a post-game reception. One of my personal highlights was the Tailgating Dinner which had food, decorations, and a live jazz band. We provided popcorn and sno-cones and the dining hall staff provided wings, chips, and meatballs in addition to regular food. Little did I know that the dining hall staff had asked all parents for recipes from home and chosen my mom’s meatball recipe. They were so good. In return for using my mom’s recipe, they gave me a personalized coffee mug that says “I had a recipe from Home for the Holidays”. Even though I haven’t had coffee in my life (same with energy drinks), I’ll find a use for it, probably with hot chocolate. It was pretty awesome for me, especially since I haven’t been home in two months and won’t return for another two.

None of my guy friends wanted to come, so I hung out with girls most of the night

As part of Student Government, I spent hours trying to sell tickets to the Formal and decorating venues. On Saturday, I got up early to decorate the Stadium. It was actually 9:30 AM, but it felt early. We had huge plans, but most of them fell through. After an hour, nine rolls of paper, and frozen hands, all that we had decorated was a small section of fence with paper balls that spelled “UR”. At least we tried.

Our hard work that was never truly appreciated… until now

The game was great. Tailgating is HUGE at Richmond. In fact, it’s rumored that more people tailgate than go to the game. It’s also rumored that a police car has to drive through the tailgating section and push everyone towards the game once the game starts. The game was well played and we won again. Our team has now climbed to being ranked 8th in the nation for Division 1 AA. I was recognized on the field for being an Intramural Champion and there was a hot dog eating contest. What could be better? Oh yeah, did I mention the F15 flyover? No one knew it was coming and it was a awesome. Definitely one of the highlights of the week. For the game, we had awesome fan support and thunder sticks too. Finally, Richmond’s fan base is alive and thriving, at least for one weekend.

Homecoming wasn’t the only thing that happened this week. Obviously, there was also Halloween. Halloween is also huge at Richmond. In fact, there are about three days of Halloween here. People take it really seriously. I decided to go to the InterVarsity Halloween Party on Wednesday. I didn’t have an outfit and had limited resources, so I simply threw together some clothes that didn’t go well together and that I had found at Goodwill. It was a fun time and I will definitely need to start thinking about my costume for next year earlier.

Other events from the week:

- I was accepted to be a Tour Guide and so I may see you if you come for a visit. Make sure to say “Hi” and tell me what you think of my posts.

- I have begun meeting with my Cabinet and we are planning a “Manly Movie Marathon”. I’ll let you know more details as the event gets closer.

- I received a pop quiz on a book that I had not read in CORE. It was a ridiculously hard and vague quiz and I was so mad. It had a section for outlining at least 20 pages of the book. After she realized no one would even get it half done in class, she let us have it as a take home and that saved me. I finished it quickly, learned the material, and was no longer mad at her.

- Public Policy is discussing education and I might end up writing a paper on it. I hope to find time that allows this.

- I had another Midterm in Economics. I actually studied for this one and only pulled a B-. This was not usual for me and I just made some stupid mistakes. I think I can improve and I hope to prove myself on the final.

- The bookstore had a sale on Richmond clothing, so I am now stocked up on Richmond apparel.

- I am in the process of making my schedule for next semester. I am looking at some classes that I didn’t think that I would take. I register in a few days, so I will let you know what I decide upon.

Our lake is really nice right now. It’s a great time of year and campus is beautiful.

Quote of the Week: “If the law is on your side, argue the law; if not, argue the facts; if neither helps, sow confusion.” -Old Courtroom Adage found in one of my Public Policy books

Thought to Ponder: On application forms why do they ask us who they should contact in case of an emergency? Shouldn’t they always contact a Doctor?

Shout Outs: Tim, Kelly, and Alex simply because they want one. Tom, Kim, and the tech staff for all of their work in getting this website up and running. My mom for her meatball recipe. Gabe for giving me rides everywhere.
