A Newer Me and My Newest Addiction

November 30th, 2007

Joy to the world. It’s another Friday night. Two weeks from right now, I will be landing back home for Christmas Break. I can’t wait to sleep in my own room again… which sadly has nothing in it but an empty dresser, an empty closet, and a bare desk. Mom and dad, it’s still like that, right? Anyways, I thought that it was a pretty low-key week, but it looks quite eventful now that I look back.

I told you that I had a wake up call in New York. I was so sore from some workouts. It made me realize that I should start eating better and working out more. Also, a good friend and former coach from back home reminded me how working out can enhance studying. So, I have been eating much better this entire week. Instead of the usual cinnamon rolls or sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit, or doughnuts, I’m now going with oatmeal, cold cereal, granola, and yogurt for breakfast. On a side note, I’ve had a strange addiction to yogurt ever since I got here. It’s weird. In general, my new lifestyle is going well. I started talking with my Bible Study group as well about this and we realized that we are all in the same boat. None of us have been working out as much as we planned. So, we are having a gym day as a group. We are making it into a type of decathlon with competitions. The winner is the first person to get out of bed the next morning. Just kidding, but maybe it should be.

For InterVarasity, we had a theater group come in and present a skit. It portrayed a church’s reaction to homosexuals. We had a deep discussion about homosexuals and Christians and their relationships. There seemed to be a lot of stereotypes and it was good to talk about it. However, my friend and I held beliefs that seemed to be in the minority. So, we are planning to meet with someone next week to discuss InterVarsity and it’s stance on homosexuality and its relationship with homosexuals. This is a very divisive topic sometimes and I don’t want to delve too deep in this blog, but I just want to show that we are open to discussion here on we are not unaware of what is happening in the world. We talk through things and try our best to see where everyone is coming from.

For fun on Thursday, I went to see our women’s basketball game. Our team isn’t that great, but we won handily. I probably wouldn’t have gone, but I get points for going and those points can earn you awesome prizes. It was worth it to see the halftime performance. I saw the Richmond Swingers. They were a group of young jump ropers from the area. They could do saw really amazing things and I was quite impressed.

On my way back from the game, I saw an event that looked interesting. It was Arabian Night. They had a Mediterranean band, good food, Henna tattoos, and plenty of information about the different countries. There are plenty of these events going on and they are all well planned and intriguing. Just tonight, I was invited by the Multicultural Student Union to come and enjoy tons of international cuisine. I had baklava, wontons, sushi, lamb meatballs, and so much more. It was awesome. There is never a lacking of on-campus events. And even less of a dearth regarding the food at these events. I need to be careful of that, I guess. I would have stayed longer at the Arabian Night, but the Packer game was about to start.

Food from the MSU Holiday Dinner. It was really good.

The Packers played the Cowboys and I was not going to miss it. It was supposed to be such a good game. Even though we lost and Brett Favre was injured, I’m still encouraged by the game. The main story from the game was my own injuries. I have a favorite dip I make with Velveeta cheese and a can of chili. It’s really good. When I was making it, however, I didn’t have a can opener. I had to use my pocket knife and I ended up splicing my finger three times between the knife and the sharp edges of the can. The dip was still tasty, regardless.

Other events to mention from this week include the weekly Student Government meeting, meeting with my adviser for Class Cabinet in order to plan next semester’s events, my participation in a psychology experiment on memory (I did it for the $8), my rapt attention to and analysis of the YouTube Republican debate, and a meeting with my academic adviser regarding next semester and my life.

Academically, I have been luckier than most. I have one paper due and finals. That is all. I am working on catching up in my classes and am proud of what I have gotten done. It is mainly the result of me locking myself in the library without a computer. That way, I get a lot more work done. I finally got my CORE midterm back and am both frustrated and happy. Economics and Spanish are going better than I could have hoped. And there is also Public Policy. We are currently discussing global warming and I actually stayed caught up for all of the readings. It was the first book in a while that I have not skipped anything. I didn’t know much about global warming before I came here, but that is changed. The book we read was overwhelmingly one-sided, but the information was still helpful.

That’s been my week. It’s Friday night, so you know what that means. Yep, I just came back from playing Catchphrase with my friends. Fun times. I’ve got a lot of events this weekend and a really important game for Spiders football. I’ll let you know how everything turns out.

I’ll Be Home For Christmas, But Not Thanksgiving

November 25th, 2007

I hope that you have all had a great Thanksgiving. I have had a very good one myself. Once again, I have not visited my family. Instead, I went to New York City to spend four days with my best friend from high school. His name is Caleb and he goes to the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. I was so excited to see someone I knew from back home. Currently, I am trapped in traffic outside of Washington D.C. on my return trip and am ready to get back to campus. However, I am even more excited to go back home for Christmas. It’s only three more weeks away. It was a little rough going through Thanksgiving without family. It’s been over three months since I’ve seen them and I’m surprised that I have done as well as I have. Well, here is an overview of my Thanksgiving Break.

I left Richmond right after I finished a test in one of my classes. I quickly packed everything together and was off to New York City. However, the traffic was really bad and we spent ninety minutes in traffic outside of Baltimore. After we finally arrived in New York and I spent the night at my suitemate’s house, I was off on my adventure in New York. I checked into my hotel in Jamaica, NY in Queens. A short while later, my friend arrived. He was all dressed up in his strict dress code and it was so good to see him. We had been looking forwards to this trip ever since Spring. Although our hotel was not in a great part of town, we really had no choice since we are both living on a college budget.

We decided to head into Manhattan and the first thing he wanted to do was eat at Chipotle, a very good Mexican burrito place. He had been deprived of it for five months and desperately wanted it. After spending an hour trying to find it and getting very lost, we happened upon it and ate. After we left, we realized that I had left my backpack there. Once again getting lost, it took us another hour to retrace the one block path to Chipotle. It was entirely my fault since I had us searching on the wrong street.

After we recovered the backpack, we headed to the Macy’s Parade Balloon Inflation. We saw all of the balloons get blown up for the next day’s parade and then headed to Times Square. We spent almost three hours there. We just wandered up and down the streets and in and out of stores a lot. I think the highlight of Times Square was the Charmin store and the M&Ms store. After a long day and sore legs, we headed back to the hotel. We were very amateur with our subway navigation and vowed to improve. After we got back, Caleb decided to do a workout to stay in shape. I, having done little exercise since arriving in Richmond, was somehow dragged into it as well. I was so exhausted and sore after we finished. Traveling had worn us out and we just wanted to sleep.

Although strange, the Charmin store provided some of the best entertainment from our trip

However, we wanted to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, so we got up at 5:00 AM on Thanksgiving and headed downtown. We arrived hours before it started and sat around. We found a really great spot to sit since there was no pedestrian traffic because it was blocked off right after we got there. It was then designated for police officers’ families. The parade was a lot of fun and we saw a lot of celebrities. There was Jordin Sparks, NeYo, Linkin Park, Good Charlotte, Dolly Parton, the Jonas Brothers, Miss Teen USA 2007, and Wynonna Judd. It was a fun time and the weather was perfect.

Jordin Sparks was part of the Macy’s Parade. She was last year’s American Idol.

After the parade, we headed back to our hotel and watched our Packers beat the Lions. However, we were so tired that we both fell asleep partway through the game. For our Thanksgiving meal, we splurged and went to McDonald’s. I called home and missed a great meal. Part of me really wished I was there, but I was also having a great time with Caleb and enjoying New York City. However, that great time with Caleb did not include his workout, which kicked my butt for the second night in a row.

Friday was another tourist day for us. We visited Central Park, the Empire State Building, Chinatown, Statue of Liberty, World Trade Center, and Little Italy (my favorite). I also really enjoyed visiting 5th Avenue and walking the street. We saw Prada, Gucci, DeBeers, and so many more outlandish stores who had window displays that we gaped at. It was really fun to still look, though. We had the best luck in the world as far as navigation and caught all of our trains right away. And, we didn’t take the wrong subway even once. Getting back late, we just watched movies and chilled in our hotel room for the rest of the night.

Caleb and I are masters of the subway system

Saturday was much of the same and I wasn’t out of bed for more than ten minutes all day. It was just a lot of movies and TV and sleep. The main highlight from Saturday was our football team winning in the playoffs. Now, we are one of the final eight teams in the playoff bracket. We play Wofford next in South Carolina. I’m really excited about this and want to see if I can make it to the game somehow. Lying around all day with nothing to do was really nice. However, our vacation had to end. We departed early Sunday and I really didn’t want to say goodbye. I knew that the time would come, but I didn’t want to go back to school yet. Both Caleb and I are counting down the days until Christmas Break gets here and we can hang out again, along with all of the rest of our friends from back home.

I am still stuck in traffic as I write this and have been for eight miles. It’s expected for another three miles. In short, this Thanksgiving was really great for seeing a good friend and getting a break. Even though my entire diet consisted of Chipotle, Chex Mix, a dessert in Little Italy, Pop Tarts, and Dominoes, it was still great. I didn’t get any homework done and need to do a little catch up now. Also, I learned that I can now master the New York City subway system. Finally, thanks to Caleb, I now realize that I need to start working out a little. It’s a little early for a New Year’s Resolution, so I’ll call it my Thanksgiving Resolution. Because his workout was easy enough to do in the hotel room, I figured that I could do some abdominal and muscle training in my dorm room. Also, since I am a little behind in my work, I have decided to block off a portion of each day to solely do homework. No Facebook, Youtube, Hangaroo, TV, or any other distractions shall be done during this time. Well, that’s been my Thanksgiving Break. Feel free to ask me any questions that you have on your mind about college or what I do with my spare time.

FreshMAN Night

November 19th

It’s almost Thanksgiving Break and I am really excited. I have big plans. I’m heading to New York to visit my best friend from high school. Meanwhile, life has continued over the past weekend. Friday night was spent going from one event to the next. I briefly stopped into the Men’s Basketball game and grabbed some free pizza as part of the pre-game festivities. The attendance at the game, however, was terrible. I went from the pre-game activities to an a cappella concert. I am afraid that I must admit something. I am addicted to a cappella music. I have been to almost every single a cappella concert since I’ve been here. The Octaves (our male only group) performed along with two guest groups and they were really good. Right after the concert, I went to the Multicultural Quiz Bowl put on by one of our on-campus groups. It was a really fun competition and I was surprised at how much I knew about different cultures. I definitely want to get a team together next year and compete.

On Sunday, I went to church once again early in the morning. After brunch, it was Packers time. I had very little homework this weekend and was so happy. Our football team had won its game on Saturday. I had really wanted to go, but hadn’t found a ride. On Sunday, it was revealed on ESPN that we were one of the sixteen teams to make the playoffs. We will have a home game this Saturday, which is disappointing since no one will be there due to Thanksgiving Break.

Monday continued as normal. I was really upset with my CORE teacher because of her grading policies and her analysis of my paper. It took her one month to grade our midterms and get them back to us. However, I was one of the two students whom she had not finished grading. So, I am still waiting for her to get me my grade after she only graded my first paper. However, I was fairly happy with my grade on my Public Policy Education paper. She is a very tough grader, but gave me a decent grade, which I thought reflected my hard work on it. Still, I wonder what it takes to get an A for her class.

The main event happened tonight. It was FreshMAN Night. As Class Chair, my main job is to put on events for Freshman guys. However, we had many setbacks from limited budgets to scheduling conflicts to legal issues. In short, we faced many frustrating setbacks. However, we pulled off a successful event. We were told my most people to anticipate 10-15 guys. We actually had 30 come. This is still pathetic compared to the 133 girls who went to their event and the fact that we have 400 guys in our class. Regardless, we had perfect planning. The event was a Poker Night and a showing of a James Bond film. My Cabinet did a good job in helping me out with this. We had pizza, chips, soda and a good time. It was a lot more work than I had anticipated, but it was worth it… for now. Now, I need to plan one for the spring semester. Tradition has it that it should be a luau.

That has been my weekend. I’m really tired and looking forwards to the break. I’m also starting to wish that I could go home. I haven’t been home since August 15th and haven’t seen my family since then as well. Not surprisingly, the number of phone calls home has increased lately. It started out with one call home every week or two during the first part of the semester. Now, it’s not rare to call home three times a week. Anyways, that’s my life and I’ll let you know how my Thanksgiving Break goes.
