10 Reasons Why I Love UR

Hello there, Prospectives!

Just thought you all might like to know what makes University of Richmond so wonderful as you get down to the wire on your college decision-making.  Here are 10 reasons why I love UR (in no particular order):

1. Beautiful campus—complete with natural aesthetics (the lake being one of the main ones) and structural masterpieces

2. Challenging academics—because nobody wants to gain knowledge without being stretched at least a little bit…and anyway, the true knowledge is gained in the stretch

3. Great cuisine—good food is always important, right?  :-)

4. Abundant resources—from scholarships and financial aid to leadership opportunities, from the Career Development Center to the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness, UR has all you need and more :-)

5. Amazing faculty and staff—they are very accomplished people who do have your best interest at heart and do all they can to see that you succeed

6. Study abroad options—UR was recently deemed the “hottest school for international studies” by Newsweek…enough said

7. Small student population—allows you to get to know your professors (and vice versa) and also gives you a better chance to take advantage of the resources available

8. Student organizations and campus activities—you can find your niche among the many student groups on campus, and if not, you can start your own

9. Friendliness—people hold doors and smile all the time…makes you feel like you’re actually human :-)

10. Safe environment—being inside the “Richmond Bubble” in combination with our Honor Code, you pretty much always feel safe…and that’s a very good thing.

And in other news…

I took my CORE exam yesterday, and it wasn’t that bad at all.  I think I did really well on it, actually, which is a very good thing.  I’m so happy to be done with Core, but at the same time, I will miss it.  Of course I won’t miss reading Nietzsche or Marx or Freud, but I will miss our class as a whole—we really became close over the course of the year.  We always had fun, we always had parties (or social gatherings, rather lol), and we always discussed so much more than just CORE (just about any and everything).  None of it would have been possible without our professor, Dr. Laskaris, who is really a great person in general.  Fortunately, she’s my academic advisor as well, so I will definitely see her throughout my years here.

Other than that…I’m just studying for my Spanish exam that I have on Thursday and am working on my Spanish paper and my Black Vernacular take-home final.  My plan is to be out of here by Friday afternoon and to have all of my work completed when I leave.  I have not even begun to pack yet, though, so that will be interesting.

I’ll have one more post for you this semester…later in the week…and that’ll be it for now.  I may be able to blog over the summer when I study abroad in Seville, Spain, but I don’t know yet.  I’ll definitely let you know.

Until later…

…and exhale…..

Hello hello, Prospectives!

How goes it out there in the wonderful world of college preparation?  Hearing back from schools?  Scholarships?  Nothing but good news, I’m sure  :-) .   Just don’t forget:  in all your college mania, don’t slack off on your schoolwork.  I know I know…senioritis is a tough thing to battle, but resist the temptation to give in to it!  Trust me, all the work pays off!  It really does!

And while we’re on the subject of hard work…

My week has been full of it!  It actually started last week, on Saturday actually.  My godmother was traveling to Fayetteville, NC to conduct a workshop on college preparation and life after high school in general.  So, who do you think invited herself along?  Well, it was me, of course.  I saw a great opportunity and decided to take advantage of it because my schedule could handle it—not to mention that my godmother was delighted to have a student perspective to add to her workshop mix.  And it was great!  After having to leave my house at 4:30 in the morning and getting lost a couple of times (fun times of course :-) ), we finally made it to Fayetteville, and I must say that the four hours of the workshop flew by!  I shared briefly on how preparing for college (and life in general) is like shooting a basketball.  How?  Well, to shoot a basketball it is important that you have BEEF—balance, elbow in (for control), eyes on the target (focus), and follow-through.  Sounds like stuff you need in college prep, and yes, even life beyond.  Well, what do you know?  Looks like we’ve got a match  ;-) .

So like I said, that in itself had me busy enough over the weekend.  But then I had to come back to school and face the two midterms and paper I had due, all on Wednesday.  The writing and studying began, even though I should have started long before I actually did.  Note:  Try your best to avoid procrastination.  It becomes a little challenging when you have things constantly being put on your plate, but I think with good time management (something I need to improve upon), it is possible.  As can be imagined, there was some stress, but it’s all past me now.

And if getting through that wasn’t enough to celebrate, I went to my Black Vernacular class today and received my first graded paper.  Mind you, this is the class that 9.5 out of every 10 people that I asked about the class told me not to take it—the professor was ridiculously hard, there was too much work, you might get a No Grade on a paper, etc.  Pretty intimidating I’d say, and I was pretty anxious to see my grade.  Well, my anxiety turned to eagerness as I progressively read the positive comments throughout my paper.  And, flipping to my sixth and final page, my eagerness flourished to elation as I saw the A- at the bottom of the page.  A minus, you might say.  I’m happy, though.  I don’t think he gives just regular A’s.  Maybe he does.  But I got pretty close, and I’m happy.  And yes, it is a big deal.  So there, to everyone who thought it wasn’t possible—I succeeded!   Now I’ll just keep going.  :-D

I’ll leave you on this high note.  And as Dori says in Finding Nemo,  “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…!”

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… :-)

It’s the end of the semester, Prospectives, and well…I’m really happy.  Not that this semester hasn’t been great, but I just really need a break!  This college thing is not something to be taken lightly—especially at exam time.

However, even amidst preparing for finals, the atmosphere has not been too tense—how could it be?  Christmastime is here!  Decorations around campus combined with the frigid weather have really gotten me ready for the holiday.

Last weekend there was a Christmas Candlighting Ceremony, where there were myriad selections performed by UR’s own Women’s Chorale and Schola Cantorum.  Additionally, the James River Ringers performed a few pieces, which I thought was pretty cool because the majority of their sounds were produced using bells.  I attended to support my friend Farren who sings in the Schola Cantorum.  There was a pretty good turnout, and I enjoyed myself.

This week started off with great news—my Spanish professor informed me that I had the choice to opt out of taking my final!  I happily chose to do just that, and without having an exam until next week, I chose to spend a few days relaxing at home.  My little brother was elated to have me home, and my mom was glad to have me there to help her put up the Christmas tree.

The days passed quickly, of course, and now I’m back on campus, studying for my Calculus and CORE final exams.  Based on the way my studying is going right now, I think I’ll do well on my finals.  And with that said, I do need to get back to practicing optimization, differentiation, and integration—Calc exam is on Monday!

I guess this is it for the semester, Prospectives!  Don’t be sad, though.  I’ll be back again in January to keep you posted on UR life.

Until then, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!  Don’t forget your January college deadlines!

That’s all she wrote!  :-)
