Soul and Spirit

Hello there, Prospectives!  So much has been going on here at UR!

This past weekend was simply wonderful!  On Friday night, the Multicultural Student Union hosted an open mic night in the Pier with guests from Tropical Soul, a lounge in downtown Richmond.  The music was great.  The performers were great.  The performances were great.  The turnout was great.  So yeah, I’d say it was pretty good, lol.  It made me want to pick up my pen a bit more often and write a few poetic words.  :-)

And the weekend just kept on rolling.  On Saturday night, there was a Spirit Lounge in the Pier that was an open mic in a Christian atmosphere collaborated by students here and at VCU.  Let me tell you—it was phenomenal!  First of all, the place was packed!  Standing room only.  It was amazing to see so many young people come together (outside of an actual church setting) to take part in glorifying God.  I mean, it was a Saturday night, which happened to coincide with UR’s Pig Roast, a university tradition that involves many festivities and many drinks for those of age.  People could have been out partying at Pig Roast, but instead, they came to edify their spirits, and that, my friends, is an amazing thing to witness.  And then, just the sheer talent that emerged from the room was exquisite.  We had people singing, miming, playing music, reading poetry, reading scriptures, and giving testimonies.  It was truly an awesome experience, and I look forward to the next event of this nature!

In other news…

Registration for the fall semester was yesterday for me.  I got all of the classes I wanted, which is a very good thing.  I signed up to take Intro to Creative Writing, Interpersonal Communication, Spanish in the Community, Diverse Learners and Environments, and Literature in Context, Genre, and Mode (or something like that).  Oh yeah, and I made a very life-altering decision too—I decided I want to be a teacher!  It’s been one of those things I feel like I’ve run from my whole life, but now I am ready to embrace it.  I’ve always loved helping people learn, but I just never thought I wanted to teach as a career (maybe because my mom always told me I would be a teacher, and on top of that, I have a long line of teachers in my family).  However, that is the decision I’ve made as of right now.  So along with that, I have to major in a core subject, so I am planning to major in English (hence, the two English classes I signed up to take).  I will probably end up taking the Interpersonal Communication class off of my schedule, because four courses are considered a full load, and believe me, they are.

That’s about it for now.  I’m planning to go home for Easter weekend, so that should be a nice little break.  I’ll keep you updated!

Later…
