10 Reasons Why I Love UR

Hello there, Prospectives!

Just thought you all might like to know what makes University of Richmond so wonderful as you get down to the wire on your college decision-making.  Here are 10 reasons why I love UR (in no particular order):

1. Beautiful campus—complete with natural aesthetics (the lake being one of the main ones) and structural masterpieces

2. Challenging academics—because nobody wants to gain knowledge without being stretched at least a little bit…and anyway, the true knowledge is gained in the stretch

3. Great cuisine—good food is always important, right?  :-)

4. Abundant resources—from scholarships and financial aid to leadership opportunities, from the Career Development Center to the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness, UR has all you need and more :-)

5. Amazing faculty and staff—they are very accomplished people who do have your best interest at heart and do all they can to see that you succeed

6. Study abroad options—UR was recently deemed the “hottest school for international studies” by Newsweek…enough said

7. Small student population—allows you to get to know your professors (and vice versa) and also gives you a better chance to take advantage of the resources available

8. Student organizations and campus activities—you can find your niche among the many student groups on campus, and if not, you can start your own

9. Friendliness—people hold doors and smile all the time…makes you feel like you’re actually human :-)

10. Safe environment—being inside the “Richmond Bubble” in combination with our Honor Code, you pretty much always feel safe…and that’s a very good thing.

And in other news…

I took my CORE exam yesterday, and it wasn’t that bad at all.  I think I did really well on it, actually, which is a very good thing.  I’m so happy to be done with Core, but at the same time, I will miss it.  Of course I won’t miss reading Nietzsche or Marx or Freud, but I will miss our class as a whole—we really became close over the course of the year.  We always had fun, we always had parties (or social gatherings, rather lol), and we always discussed so much more than just CORE (just about any and everything).  None of it would have been possible without our professor, Dr. Laskaris, who is really a great person in general.  Fortunately, she’s my academic advisor as well, so I will definitely see her throughout my years here.

Other than that…I’m just studying for my Spanish exam that I have on Thursday and am working on my Spanish paper and my Black Vernacular take-home final.  My plan is to be out of here by Friday afternoon and to have all of my work completed when I leave.  I have not even begun to pack yet, though, so that will be interesting.

I’ll have one more post for you this semester…later in the week…and that’ll be it for now.  I may be able to blog over the summer when I study abroad in Seville, Spain, but I don’t know yet.  I’ll definitely let you know.

Until later…

Last Day of Classes!!! :-)

Hello there, Prospectives!

Today was the last day of classes, and I am so excited!  I have successfully made it through my first year of college (well, with the exception of finals) and I do NOT want to transfer!  That is a big deal because you would be surprised at the number of college students (at all colleges/universities) who transfer after their first year because of dissatisfaction.  I don’t have any statistics for you, lol, but I personally know of quite a few of my friends from high school and elsewhere who are dealing with that issue.

But let’s get to the good stuff…

My Black Vernacular professor returned our graded research papers to us the other day, and I got a B+!  Excited about a B+ you say?  Absolutely!  You will find that high school is not like college, and you must transition accordingly.  No, I am not at all saying that you will not get the A’s that you are used to receiving.  However, you will probably have to work a little harder to get them.  Also, you will have to accept that there may be some occasions when you put your heart and soul into an assignment and earn every bit of the B+ that you receive.  It may be disgruntling, but you just take it all in stride.  Learn from your mistakes and work to improve upon them next time.  Or if you know that you did the absolute best that you could do, just take a deep breath and move on.  It is not the end of the world!

And more greatness…

I turned in my portfolio today for my Drawing 101 class, and a lot of my drawings turned out better than I could have ever expected.  I learned so much in that class!  And maybe I uncovered some partial hidden talent that I have…just maybe :-) .

Research-writing wrongs and a fashion show

Hello again, Prospectives!  Hope all is well in the world of college preparation and decision-making.

Things here are getting pretty busy.  For starters, I pulled my first all-nighter the night before last.  I know, I know:  I’m supposed to be setting the example for you guys of exemplary collegiate behavior.  However, sometimes you do what you must to survive—survival of the fittest, right?  Anyway, I had planned to work on my 10-12 Black Vernacular research paper all last week, completing two pages everyday starting on Monday.  That way, I would be finished with my paper between Friday and Saturday, and I would be able to take a break from it before returning to critically read and revise it and turn it in today, Tuesday.  My plan started off great until Wednesday when I had a doctor’s appointment, an induction ceremony for Phi Eta Sigma, a freshmen honor’s society (go me! :-) ), and then a close-out Oliver Hill Scholars meeting, which was a dinner to honor the graduating seniors within the program.  All this was on top of my 3 classes, one of which is 2 hours by itself.  So yeah, I was quite busy on Wednesday and only got about 3/4 of a page written.  The next day, I just wasn’t in a productive mood, which happens sometimes as a student, so I only got one page written.  And Friday, after my 3 classes, I went to William and Mary to support my sister’s friend’s fashion show and stayed for the party, of course ;-) .  From there, I went home.  When I finally woke up on Saturday, I had a little dilemma—this was the day I was supposed to be finished my paper, yet I only had completed 5 ¾ of my research paper.  So what did I do?  I sat in front of my computer for hours trying to come up with in-depth analysis of my topic, not getting very far.  At the end of the day I only had a little over 7 pages.  Well, the next day was Easter Sunday, so spending time with loved ones was a must before returning to campus.

And that, my friends, is how I was driven to the decision to finish my paper at all costs on Sunday night, the cost, of course, being a restful night of sleep.  I went to 8:15 @ Boatwright (our on-campus coffee shop) and bought a medium white chocolate mocha with caramel because I would not be able to stay up on my own.  I worked and worked and worked away from 10 p.m. to 5:57 a.m., which is when I reached the last line of my tenth page and coincidentally completed my final thought.  Later, when I woke up, I revised my paper and ended up with 10 ½ pages in all, and a pretty decent work at that.  I washed my hands of it when I turned it in at 12:45 pm today in class, and I was quite relieved.

Disclaimer:  I do not condone putting schoolwork on the backburner or pulling all-nighters.

However, I do think that I pulled it all together in the end, and I still got to enjoy my weekend :-) .  Will I do it again?  Absolutely not.  I will try by any means necessary to stick to my schedule when it comes to completing work.  I’ve learned, albeit the hard way, that procrastination hurts you in the end, one way or another.  Take it from me, Prospectives:  prioritization and time management are extremely important to your success in college, so do all you can to work towards perfecting those areas of your life because you don’t want to go the hard way if you can take it from somebody who has already been there, done that, and has the bags under her eyes to prove it, lol.

And now that you’ve spent all this time reading about what you shouldn’t do, enjoy these pictures from the LiVE Fashion Show for HIV/AIDS awareness at William and Mary:

That’s all for now, Prospectives.  Until next time…
